(ever) ...been through the desert on a horse with no name?

Asked by fremen_warrior (5510points) August 3rd, 2012

Or camel… Needn’t have been nameless either… Whatever…

Have any of you Jellies ever seen the open desert, or – better yet – travelled through the desert as part of a caravan? Care to share your experiences? I’ve never seen a desert much less crossed one, and for some reason I’m curious what it might be like. Cheers!

Took a trip on horseback into Death Valley. It was way too hot for the likes of me and I’m pretty sure I’m the reason why we had to turn back early (I love my water).

Backcountry camping in the Mojave (Joshua Tree), as well some hiking/rock scrambling. Seriously one of the most enjoyable, beautiful, foreign, and terrifying places I have been.

Yes, but I would prefer not to repeat my time in that sandbox.

I drove from San Diego to Las Vegas and back, straight through the Nevada desert. Twice. In a rental car. In August.

And there’s some good long stretches through the middle of nowhere. The thermometer read the outside temp as 102–105F most of the time.

Went to Arizona once for New Years, was keen on seeing some actual desert. It was…different. And not miserable, owing to it being January. It was part of a state park, though.
I’d still like to go someplace where it’s just trackless desert for miles.

<—-The SO and I were in Morocco over a year ago, and we rode on two camels (Hannah and Claudia) across a sandy section for about 30 minutes. Does that count?

I’ve been through the California, Nevada, Arizona & New Mexican deserts.
Last trip was in ‘06 all over the SW and the best was drinking wine from an obscure little winery outside of Taos N.M. and the stars in the desert are unmatchable, except maybe for the high mountains.

Yes. Many times as I live close to the desert.

I have been through the Mojave Desert several times, and spent nearly a week at Scotty’s Castle, in Death Valley, California.
For the record, there was someone there for to give me some pain.

@filmfann LOL

I like the plants and birds and rocks and things.

I’ve been to dunes somewhere far east of San Diego. My experience was beautiful. There was about 6 of us in a van Dodge Ram van, those hunky grey ones. One adult, 3 teenagers and my friend and I, both of which were kids. I remember leaving the major San Diego East high way and going towards the mountains, eventually I guess we were traveling into some sort of highway that went through the mountains. The moon was lit brightly, the stars glistened, the air was crisp. I just remember good conversations and overall good vibes while hearing about what we were going to do. We were traveling to catch snakes and other desert animals. Eventually we got to some sort of destination. It was extremely chilly, probably near 3am. With the moon being full we were able to see the ground quite easily. I remember my buddies dad talking about animals not being out during full moon because owls were on the look out. And I think an owl even swooped by us. Tarantulas and scorpions were the only things I saw that night. Eventually the sun rose around 4 to 5. I’m not too sure, I do however remember intensely needing to go use #1. So we finally got out the van and it was a group thing of find a place and let it flow kind of deal. And we did. The morning was super cold. We found interesting snakes that morning. “The Dunes” for me aren’t associated with 4 wheel drive off road equipment, instead it’s a place of beauty and nature in my memory.

Aside from living in the SW, I rode a train from Cairo to Luxor, but it was over night in an old fashioned sleeper car.

I flew over Egypt before landing in Cairo and saw the desert encroaching into the edges of towns. The desert looked like it was trying to engulf these towns, piling up along the edges and like it was inevitably going to win.
I also rode a camel, but only briefly.
The movie “Lawrence of Arabia” gives a very clear Idea of what it’s like to be out on the Sahara Desert.

I have traveled through the center of Australia several times. I love it, the red dirt, scrub trees, amazing rocks, wild camels, emus, beautiful birds and on and on. The colours are so dynamic and dramatic, there is no blue like the sky there. I really like that climate also, freezing cold at night and in the morning but by midday, shorts and a t shirt are just fine. Look here to see what I mean.

I have ridden horses and camels and motorcycles there but they all had their own names, well except for the motorcycles, they were all called Harley!

@rooeytoo

Did you ever see an inland Taipan there?

rooeytoo's avatar

@Brian1946 – We had a couple in our backyard when we lived in southern Queensland on the coast. They were inland, but not more than a couple of hundred km when I lived in the NT. Other than those personal experiences, I don’t really know????? I think in the desert regions king browns are the scary ones.

I have driven over the desert sand dunes outside Dubai in a 4X4 if that counts. It was evening and it was cool, the sand was a reddish colour and there were rocky cliffs in places and even an isolated shrub or two. It was a bit hair raising when cresting the dunes as our vehicle felt as if it might tip over. The rather pleasant girl who sat next to me has become nameless though she told me her name at the time.

My brother and I had very bad whooping cough in rainy, cold Long Island when we were kids, and the doc told our ma to take us to a dry place. What luck! We went to a ranch near Sasabe, Arizona, and rode horses all day long every day till our coughs went away – not nearly long enough to suit us. My brother’s horse was named Chico. My horse was brown.
This happened when I was eleven, too long ago for me to remember her name.
