What does it mean when the cd player in the car makes a grinding noise when starting the car?

I don’t know if it’s the cd player itself but something near that area is making this loud, grinding noise. I don’t know exactly how to describe the noise, sort of the same noise a cd in a laptop makes when it first starts up, only louder and has more vibration.

If it’s in the CD player, it could be that the read head (which is an electromechanical device that is actually reading the CD) is not in place. It suggests, but is not 100% of the case, that either the CD is inserted wrong, or (more likely) the head (which moves) is on the road to breaking.

Sort of like a needle on a phonograph record, if you are old enough to remember that.
