Why aren't my back up lights working?

Asked by twiggles90 (85points) August 14th, 2012

I have 2000 Buick century and my back up lights won’‘t work. They stopped working then they fixed themselves and now they aren’t working again. I was hoping to figure out a way to fix it so my boyfriend can fix it so I don’t have to put it in the shop. Hes a mechanic, but he doesn’t have much electric knowledge. So hopefully if I can figure out whats wrong and where everything is we can get it fixed before inspection in Oct. If anyone could help plz let me know. Thank you

first I would check the fuse
second, check the switch
then check the wiring to the lights

where is the fuse and the switch located?

The fuse is in the fuse box with the others, but the location of the fusebox features varies from car to car. Most have it in the footwell of the drivers seat, under the dash, and on the left, sometimes covered by a panel, sometimes not. Check your owners manual for that.

As for the switch, I believe most Buicks are column-shift, which means the switch would be in the steering column. Now, I’ve replaced shocks and head gaskets before, but even I hesitate ripping apart a steering column, so it may be best to pay someone else to do it, but check the fuse first. Fuses are easy to replace.

There is also a slight chance that you blew both bulbs. Unlikely, but easier to check/replace than the switch.
