A fungal nail and skin infection combined with not having had the nails cut for a long time.

Neglect, with the end result as @Lightlyseared described. I’ve seen my father’s (end-stage diabetic) feet look similar, but not as severe.

I’ve seen images like that before. Is it possible that it is because of pain? I know someone whoe nails hurt when being clipped.

I concur with @Lightlyseared that they have a fungal nail and skin infection and lack of care of their toe nails.

Urgh. That looks like one serious fungal infection.

And those fungified nails get thick and strong. My husband had some of that fungus – nothing compared to this – and he could only trim those two toenails by grinding them down with a Dremel tool.

I assumed fungus and neglect, but I really wasn’t sure. Thanks! :)
