How does Craigslist make money?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) August 30th, 2012

At the end of a posting an ad, it says very nicely, “Thanks for posting with us we really appreciate it!”

So what’s in it for them?

They’re a private company so Craig Newmark is not concerned about maximizing revenue, but rather being a useful tool for people.

The money comes from paid listings from companies, such as job ads and some real estate listings. Most of the major cities cost around $25 per ad, but living near SFO is $75 acording to wikipedia.

They own stock in Bain Capital :-)

Seriously – there are a few categories, as @sinscriven writes, for which fees are charged. Apparently there is enough volume in job ads and such to pay the bills.
