How do I make a duplicate of Mac Mt. Lion before I install it?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) September 5th, 2012

My guru explained today (before he left) to click on Finder—> File—-> Duplicate in order to get a copy since there are no longer discs. This has not worked. So I am leaving the window up without hitting the “install” button. Any ideas? I want to preserve a “Install Mt. Lion” dupe in my Applications Folder.

I’m a bit foggy on why you want to do what you want to do. It seems a bit unnecessary.

In the event that things go tits-up you will not be able to install from what the app store put in your app folder unless you take some nasty (nothing damaging, just a but messy) steps. I can walk you through things is you get me in iChat in the next hour.

If you can do the microphone thing in iChat I can help you out. I will send you my username in a PM.

1. Drag the app to the desktop
2. Control + Click the app
3. You’ll find Duplicate and select it valoilah!

(When you download it from the app store, it should show up on your desktop, that install folder won’t go away after you install it, you might want to put “Install Mt. Lion” in a seperate Documents folder maybe under something like, “Software Installs” since Applications are typically the place where you would store apps that are already installed on your computer)

My guru just called. Before I click on the “Install” button, I click on another part of the Install window…then Finder—> File—-> Duplicate. Two forms then appear in the Application Folder. “Install OS X Mt Lion copy” and “Install OS X Mt. Lion.” When I do the installation, I will have the Duplicate and the installed Mt. Lion both there.

Just did it. Everything seems to be fine

Thanks for the help, both of you.
