How do I import my DVD-R home video movie to iMovie?

I used Disc Utility to copy the video and now it plays on my laptops’s DVD player. I tried following some tips from the net on how to copy it to iMovie but no luck so far. My goal is to select some scenes from the DVD for internet posting. Thanks for your help!
