What are some good ideas for a first birthday party?

My niece is turning 1 in November and my sister and I have been trying to come up with ideas/themes for the party. We’ve been racking our brains but everything seems overdone and/or too cheesy. We want it to be something simple and tasteful, yet age-appropriate. Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
