Do you know of the dangers of BPA in the lining of cans?

Asked by rooeytoo (26981points) September 16th, 2012

I just came across this article. I don’t use many canned goods except diced tomatoes which are the base for many recipes I use.
I have never seen frozen tomatoes nor do I remember seeing plain tomatoes in glass. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative?

Go to your local farmers market or farm stand around this time of year (fall) and dip them in boiling water and remove skin put in ziploc freezer bags and freeze. You will get the best of both worlds this way, the freshness of summer and no chemicals and additives they use in processing the foods. I do this every year and use them in place of canned.

@creative1 – yes, I thought of that but I live in Australia and it is now just coming into spring. The only fresh tomatoes available are from the supermarket, $8.98 a kilo and they are like red cricket balls, not much good. But I was thinking I would do that when the time is right. In the meantime, I don’t know what to do!

I found this site with a couple of canned tomatoes that are BPA Free, I don’t know if they are in Australia but I have tried the Muir Glen brand before and they just went BPA free as of October 2011.

Yes. I have been avoiding most canned food for years.

We can buy Muir Glen canned goods here.

I get salsa and marinara sauce in jars. They can substitute for canned tomatoes in most recipes.

Yes, I have been aware of this for many years. We are all being exposed to toxic chemicals every day of our life from our food, to our furniture, to our water, to the very air we breathe. There is no escaping it, and very little we can do to avoid it.

@creative1 – thank you for that link, I will look for that brand but don’t hold out too much hope.

@gailcalled – I prefer the plain tomatoes and then adding my own spices. There is something they put into most sauces that doesn’t agree with my stomach.

@YARNLADY – I agree but I do avoid what I can when I can. I will continue to use canned tomatoes until I can buy them fresh and cheap and then will freeze bags of them for the next winter.

Thank you one and all and lurve to you!
