How can I get a rug really clean?

Asked by deni (23141points) September 17th, 2012

I have this rug that is about 3’x5’ maybe, fairly small. I’ve had it for years though and most of it is black (has a big Steeler symbol in the middle, so a lot of white and gray too). Over the years my cat has vomited on it (he literally seems to vomit almost solely on this rug) so many times I can’t even count, and there are numerous stains on it that look really gross. I love this rug and just simply need a way to really deep clean it, so I was wondering can I take it to a dry cleaner? I don’t have a steam cleaner or really even a normal vacuum (I Borrow my neighbors occassionally but it sucks)...Or should I leave it outside and let the rains get to it? BUt then it will be wet? It’s a pretty thick rug, maybe an inch, so I feel like it might stay wet for a while. I am fed up with this gross rug and simply looking for a solution and at this point the vomit stains seem to be embedded, so, can anyone help?

Yes, it can be cleaned. On an Internet search, use area rug cleaning (city name). Then contact the ones that come up. They can give you a quote based upon size and material. I found one that can either pick-up or I can drop it off. It’s not cheap, but if the rug means that much to you, it is worth the cost.

You can also vacuum it very well and rent a steam cleaner. They usually have them at grocery stores, or maybe a friend will lend you theirs.

What my mother does is; treats the stains with hydrogen peroxide or stain remover the night before then she scrubs them with a brush and soapy water finally hoses them down and hangs them out to dry. Good as new.
I would not recommend the preceding on expensive, delicate rugs, though.

(*Oh man, your neighbor’s vacuum sucks… that blows !!! )

@Sarah90 HAHA. That sounds like a good method, maybe I’ll give that a go, thanks!

I would get a can of spray foam rug cleaner and take it outside and use the cleaner as directed. Use a scrub brush and really go after it. Use a hose to rinse it very well and then hang it outside to dry.
