What are some ideas to get my two dogs from running up the hill in the back yard and barking at the other dogs when the neighbors let theirs out?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) September 24th, 2012

Ok so the running up the hill I don’t mind, it’s the constant barking that I mind and unless I call their names followed by a “down” command they won’t come down. Well how can I get them to stop this behavior in the first place?

They are chihuahua, poodle, maltese mix so they are small girls, but they jump up the 4 foot wall we have in place that separates our hill from the patio.

So what would be the method for getting them not to go run up the hill hollering World War 3?

I recommend watching a couple of episodes of “The Dog Whisperer”.

Cross fencing?

My guys will bark and run the fence-line when the neighbor lets her dogs out. If they are barking, I call them in exactly once. If they didn’t come (more when they were puppies), I went and got them. Now they come when called exactly once.

@Kayak8 I wonder if you’re my neighbor! Haha they do exactly what you describe running the fence. They do come back on command. It’s just I wish I knew how to teach them I don’t want them hollering in the first place.

Landscaping. The dog types you have will continue to bark if they continue to see the offending dogs.

@SpatzieLover My guys can’t see the other dogs through the fence, but they are totally aware of their presence. They don’t bark at dogs being walked along the road on the one side of the fence (but still run the fence line), but they do bark at the neighbor’s dog next door. There is no amount of landscaping I could do that wouldn’t be shredded and I couldn’t afford to build up the ground and effectively reduce the height of the fence. How do you mean landscaping?
