Any ideas what this reaction to an old bug bite could be?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) September 26th, 2012

A few weeks ago I got bit by some type of nocturnal insect. It looked like a cross between a moth and a horsefly. It took a chunk out of my leg, and it swelled up and turned red. The next day I had a bad reaction to the bite, the whole shock thing and had to get a steroid shot. Now the site of the bite has swelled up again and it feels like there’s a small ball or something in there. Any ideas what this could be? It’s been two weeks so I’m not worried about the bite, just curious.

I hope it didn’t lay eggs inside of you. Eww.

@chyna Oh friggin great. Thanks for that image.

I remember your question asking about what insect this could have been. I tried and tried to find it online based on your description of it, but I found nothing at all. So without knowing what bit you, it’s hard to say. But did you scratch it a lot? Some bug bites have a way to infect a bit if not left alone. :/ I doubt that’s it from what you’re saying, but if you have been scratching it…

@Symbeline It didn’t itch at first. It’s been two weeks and it itched a little and I felt a bump and looked and its the bite.

@Adirondackwannabe : You may not be worried about it, but I am. That sounds like the reaction one gets from a bad spider bite.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake I think it is a reaction to whatever toxin he got me with, but it was a flying insect.

It is alarming that after two weeks it acts up again…you know some parasites do lay eggs in people, but I’m not entirely sure on just how many of those we have in America. Maybe a few, and that usually happen out of freak situations? Not sure what this could be, but probably nothing gross like that, or at least I really hope not.

@Symbeline Yeah. You and me both. Although that might be a cool freak show booth at a goth festival.

I’d go.

@blueiiznh But this is my chance at fame!

Does it feel like a perfectly round ball? It could be a cyst.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

It’s not symetrical

JLeslie's avatar

Scar tissue?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

It just popped up in the last day or so. There was a tiny mark from the bite for the past few weeks, but it was smooth. The bite was about the size of the dimple on a golf ball. The bump is 21/2 times that size.

Very strange. Let us know what happens.

@JLeslie Oh great, I’m now a fluther science experiment. I’ll end up like The Fly or something.:)

You are going back to the doctor, right? because you learned your lesson about waiting too long? Right?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Jeruba Yes. If it’s still there in the morning I’m calling. There’s something about wondering if I’m going to breathe or not teaches even me to call the Dr. This doesn’t appear to be anything acute but I’ll have it looked at.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Give @JLeslie and @Hawaii_Jake a cigar. It’s scar tissue. Evidently the venom killed a bunch of the tissue around the bite site. It’s similar to a spider bite. Leave it to me to find a venomous moth. Fastest Dr’s visit ever. She recognized it immediately.

I’m so glad it wasn’t eggs. ‘Cause I remember this episode from the Twilight Zone where this bug got in this guys ear and laid eggs and…. but you probably don’t want to know about that.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@chyna Big Twilight Zone fan. I know the episode.

chyna's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer Yes! That’s it! Since Rod Serling was the host of both shows, I got it mixed up. Why is my ear starting to itch inside?

JLeslie's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Next time @gailcalled hassles me about giving medical advice, can you tell her I guessed your problem correctly? I keep telling her I am pretty good at it. ~

I think maybe I chanel Edgar Cayce.
