Why do my soy products taste like fish?

Asked by DesireeCassandra (1140points) October 2nd, 2012

I have been eating tofu, soy beef, and soy chicken for pretty much ever! Lately when I cook with them I and my gf have been getting this weird fishy taste. I tried different brands and it keeps happening. Is this happening to anyone else?

Are you cooking with canola oil? Canola oil is high in omega 3 fatty acids, which makes things smell like fish (which are also high in the same fatty acids).

You ain’t lived until you’ve tried waffles that smell like fish!

Like @wundayatta, I’d blame either the oil you’re cooking with, or your cookware. Did you make stinky, oily fish in the pan you’re cooking with?

Olive oil. I will try a different pan next time! :)

Try peanut oil or safflower oil just to see if it makes a difference. Also, look at the ingredients in the soy products to see if they include any oils and if so, what kind. Finally, tray sauteing the soy products at a lower temperature. Olive oil does not stand up to the highest temperatures and can change its molecular structure. So reduce the temp and see if that makes a difference.
