How is this iPhone 4s going for so much on eBay? [details inside hurry!]?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) October 2nd, 2012

So retail iPhone 4s for Virgin Mobile USA goes for $649.99. The other day I watched one go for $810.00 and this one is going for 1k+. I’m in awe. I’m wondering if it’s a bot bidding?

Do you think it’s a fake bidding?

It’s either that or it’s a real fanboy who is nuts on Apple products pips and all.

Ok nevermind apparently the price has kicked down to 600+ something is definitely wrong. I noticed the seller has zero credibility at this point having zero stars.

I don’t know if its possible but I am betting the seller is bidding on his own product to get the price up

@creative1 not a bad answer. I seem to recall there was a case where an ebay user was prosecuted for doing something along those lines, where he would bid on his own product using another account, so that another bidder would bid a higher price and end up paying more for it. If he lost out on the bid, he didn’t lose anything, and if he won on the bid, it wouldn’t matter because he wouldn’t need to pay himself money (well duh). So it’s possible, but you’d get ‘done’ for it.

@lightsourcetrickster It’s still a gamble, as he’d have to pay eBay fees on the final sale price. He’d probably have to go through all the hassle of setting up a fake PayPal account to pay himself.

Also, people in certain countries would very likely pay out the nose for an Apple product if they think they’ll be able to use it. I know that when I was selling records on eBay there were certain bands that I just knew were going to sell to Thailand for hundreds of dollars, and they had 15 copies of it at Hot Topic for $10.
