How to do 50s-style curls with naturally curly hair?

Asked by flash74686 (478points) October 7th, 2012

So my hair is naturally pretty curly and I have no idea how to style it, period. This Halloween, I’m going to dress like Sandy from the very end of Grease, and I was wondering if there was a different way for me to style my hair than, say, a non-curly girl. Or just any tips in general.

If you need a reference, my hair looks a little like this: http://d277vln4jzkhhg.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/AnnaLynne-McCord-controlled-waves.jpg

And a quick reminder of Sandy’s hair: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2742/4467018473_735aab8593.jpg

And if anyone has ideas for a more modern (but still true to the film) version, that works too! :) Thanks in advance to everyone.

Do you have a hairdresser you go to and could ask to style your hair for you for this occasion? I did that one year and was charged about 10 dollars.

See how it looks if you pin the sides back and up with barettes. In the picture, one side is pinned up. Or you can try making kiss curls on your cheeks by taping the hair in a curl flat against your skin while it is wet. (Or use “Dippity-do” to form individual curls on the sides or on top.)
