Any ideas on what might be the problem with my router?

Asked by rojo (24179points) October 12th, 2012

I have to unplug the power my upstairs router so that I can get internet downstairs. It seems to be getting worse. It used to be that I had to do it occasionally but now it has become an everyday affair.
Is it a router or a cable problem? I think it is the router because the upstairs computer is active at all times regardless of the whims of the router. ‘Course, it is wired in directly to it.
Is it time for a new one?

I recently had a router wear out. It did exactly as you are describing, if I’m reading correctly. The signal would go on and off. It was not the cable; it was the router. I bought a new one, and everything works perfectly now. The old router lasted about 5 years, by the way.

Power supply on the router.

Or a loose antenna on the wireless side of it.

Routers are cheap to replace – $25 max for a cheap one.

My cordless phone was on the same frequency as my router. Talking on the phone would interfere and break the connection. Very frustrating. I replaced the phone.

Do you have two routers on the same network? An upstairs router and a downstairs one? If so, that could be the problem. Routers don’t play nicely with each other. I couldn’t have two on mine. Had to limit it to one.

@wundayatta No, just the one.
@LuckyGuy How can you tell if they are? I don’t think this is the problem because it has worsened over time.
@elbanditoroso checked the antenna on the unit and the PCI card seems fine. Not sure on the power supply end of it. I did verify it is plugged in well but to “reboot” it I pull out the connector at the unit not at the outlet.
@Hawaii_Jake I think this may be it. It is about four years old and was not an expensive model to begin with.
Thanks to all.

@rojo The phone was labelled as operating at 2.4GHz and I ran the following experiment.
While online, I picked up the phone and dialed my cell phone. I lost my connection immediately .
