Can you stay connected via a lap top on international flights?

Asked by Shippy (10015points) October 30th, 2012

I asked someone who fly’s a lot and he said sure, you get a “dongle”. I have no idea what a dongle is. But my question is, can you stay connected say for e.g. on Yahoo messenger or so on international flights, via your laptop?

I know that some airlines offer internet access on their flights (such as Virgin Airways) and it may be free, but this does depend on the company as others do charge and it might even depend on the class you are sitting in. This is for both short haul as well as long haul and international flights so you would be best to ask the airline when quizzing about flights.

It’s a crap shoot, not all airlines and not all flights and it’s usually expensive. I have never needed it bad enough to pay for it.

For what it’s worth, This is a dongle.

@Judi It’s not always expensive. Granted it’s not international, but Southwest offers 5 dollar internet access on flights that are wifi enabled.
