What do you put in legumes, when cooking, to reduce gas?

Asked by jazmina88 (11652points) October 31st, 2012

I am soaking some lima beans and have not made them in awhile. Is it baking soda that you put in a pinch, to reduce gas?

I put in a bit of baking soda because my MIL told me to. I thought it was supposed to help soften the beans faster, but I have no idea if it really works.

I think it’s a pinch of cloves. I use a smidgen of cloves in baked beans which helps to eliminate gas. I don’t know about Lima’s.

Found a good website: http://alexpicotannand.com/2011/04/07/how-to-cook-eat-beans-and-fart-less/

From this website: ‘If you want to make things more interesting, spice up your beans with gas-reducing spices like cumin, turmeric, ginger, cloves, coriander, dill, or a squeeze of fresh lemon.’
