If I thought I lost a Comcast modem and therefore was charged for it, and then I found it, what should I do with it?

Asked by deni (23141points) November 1st, 2012

I ask this here because I hate Comcast, hate dealing with them, and am trying to avoid that at any cost.

But if I take it into the store, will they then reimburse me for what I was charged for it (I think somewhere around 40 or 50 bucks?) or can I sell it on Craigslist? Or is it not useable by anyone else?

If you reimbursed Comcast for a purportedly lost modem and then found it, you now own it. You may dispose of it however you wish.

Is it just a modem or a modem/router combination?

Ie: was of used for wireless?

If not, you might as well junk it since it’s ancient tech by today’s demands.

If it’s a router as well, sell it on Craigslist.

@Buttonstc I think it’s both, we used it until August of this year. I am TERRIBLE! with internet electronic related things, part of why I asked this question. So I don’t know what it is. I should go get it out of the closet and inspect I guess.

If you used it for wireless Internet then it’s a router. Were you able to use your laptop for Internet without plugging it in? (I don’t mean to an electric outlet. I’m blanking on the proper term for a moment.)

You mean rather than the type of internet that you literally have to connect to the computer to use? No it wasn’t like that.

Yes, I was referring to Ethernet connectors. Temporarily had a brain fart.

So, if it was NOT Ethernet that means it was a wireless router.

Believe it or not, several years ago it required an hour conversation with two of my roommates for me to figure it all out.

Technically speaking, modem refers to the device used to translate signals between a computer and a telephone line. (that’s how things were done in ancient times). The name is an abbreviated form of what it did with those signals. MODulate/DEModulate.

A router is what carries and distributes wireless signals. A modem carries signals to a wired network only. A modem by itself cannot carry wireless signals.

But for some strange reason, even tho a connection is wireless, some (including Comcast personnel) keep calling it a modem when in reality it’s a combination modem/router (also known as a gateway). Since gateway with a capital G is the name of a company selling computers, I prefer to avoid it in favor of saying router simply to avoid unnecessary confusion.

Anyhow, since your device apparently carried wireless signals, you have a router/modem which you can sell on Craigslist since it’s current enough to have some value.

Just make sure to describe it as a router/modem in your title and listing.
