(NSFW) When you were a kid, did you ever watch scrambled porn on tv?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) December 8th, 2012

And did you ever find yourself trying to see if you could unscramble it? Were you successful?

Sometimes if I switched channels and then back to the naked channel, I could get a somewhat clear picture. Didn’t always work, though.

In the old days in South Africa we were SO heavily censored. Nipples in magazines were covered with blocks, TV was boring, and no sex was ever mentioned or seen anywhere. You could literally be thrown into jail if found with Playboy or other pornographic material.

So imagine our surprise one night when watching the 6 O clock news, the screen wobbled, and squiggled and there we were watching full blown porn? I sat there with an open mouth confused.

Clearly the staff responsible were fired from the SABC for watching porn back stage and airing in error.

Wow, good story @Shippy. I had no idea that there was this kind of censorship in SA. How long did that last?

When I was a kid I remember being at school and there being stories about being able to find German TV channels via satellite that ended up showing porn after midnight. The thing was I didn’t have satellite so I was stuck with the 4 channels that everybody got through a normal aerial. I was then disappointed when we got cable tv only to then discover that the German channel that we had did nothing of the sort.

@bookish1 I think from 1960’s to the 1990’s. Not only that but, same sex relations, culture crossing, color crossing, even area crossing could land you in jail. I have been followed by Police a number of times for a few of these.

How times change, here we have gay marriage, soft porn daily and no laws at all it seems!!

When the scrambled porn channels came on I was in my thirties. Some friends and I tried watching it a couple times but it gave us headaches, and wasn’t much fun.

The closest thing I remember was trying to prise apart the pages of Playboy magazine that had been left out in the rain.

I wasn’t a kid, but I remember trying that trick of switching away and switching back. If you were lucky, you got about a second of porn you could see. Actually, it was soft core porn, so you never got to see intercourse, but naked women were pretty cool.

Thank god Al Gore invented the internet. Without that, I’m sure I’d be one of those poor shifty-eyed guys frequenting the sex booths in the back rooms of the sex stores in the seamy neighborhoods of the city.

We didn’t have a TV when I was a kid, so I missed these delights.

I was a kid long before cable TV and scrambled porn channels. We barely had three channels in the 1960s

SO, no.

Brings back memories – when I was young, the adult channels on cable were scrambled such that the left 40% of the picture was on the right side, and and the right 40% was on the left. That meant the center 20% (where all the action was) was not visible. Colors were messed up too. Not quite worth the headache.

I do remember trying to see it but as RocketGuy explained it, that was the same for me, until I was about 14 when we moved and low and behold we got this huge circular thing in our yard called a satellite dish, and omg the channels were free. I was told I could have my TV connected to the dish, the downside, I had to watch the same shows since we only had one converter. So whatever was playing on the main level was what I had to watch.

This was how I found out that my dad regularly watched porn in the middle of the night..thanks to my dad I watched porn almost every Saturday night, I had no choice..lol I hate porn now, it is only animalistic and actually since it is readily available through the internet now is showing the next generation that relationships are not made up of love just the act of sex.

Now because of the internet typical age for children to watch porn is less than 14, I can’t remember the actual age, but I don’t think its teaching them the guide to marriage and monogamy.

I live in Québec. We don’t censor porn.

but seeing as I didn’t live here all my life…
Haha but no, never tried to watch scrambled porn…living a big part of my life without cable, even if I had wanted to check it out, I already knew from experience that it wouldn’t work. And by the time I did get interested in seeing such things, I had other resources that didn’t involve trying to see it on paid channels. Porn mags aren’t that hard to get by, even if you’re not old enough to buy them. I hung around the bad crowds so it’s not like all this stuff was some kinda myth lol.

There were no porn channels in the UK when I was a kid, scrambled or otherwise. We only had three channels at all, back then, and two of them were the BBC.
