Cosplaying for Beginners?

Asked by Magic5678 (174points) December 31st, 2012 from iPhone

Hi everyone! I’m a teenager with shoulder length black hair interested in doing an awesome cosplay for an anime convention I’m planning to attend in May. I didn’t know how long it would take to make the costume, so I figured I’d get a good head start.
I play to be attending with my older cousin (college age) and we thought we could go as Edward and Jet from Cowboy Bebop, but we thought Jet’s arm would be too big of a task for beginners like us.
I need some ideas for some cool characters that are somewhat easy to make outfits for. It doesn’t have to be team outfits that go together though. We’re fine with going as characters from separate animes.

The Crow? Or I guess you could cut your hair and go as Speed Racer . . . sorry, dunno much about anime.

I thought cosplay was the same as LARP (live-action role playing), not just dressing up. Am I mistaken?

I don’t know what style your hair is, but L from Death Note is pretty easy to cosplay. Just go for some flip-flops or sandals instead of going barefoot. L might be too easy, though. Maybe revolution-era Saito Hajime from Rurouni Kensin? If you can pull off the Shinsengumi costume well enough, I doubt anyone will care that your hair is technically a little short for the character. I can’t really give recommendations for your cousin without knowing more about what he looks like.

@submariner In cosplay, the costume is the play and doesn’t require anything further than being dressed up as a character. Some do more, but many do not.
