Why do I prefer to write songs when I'm sad rather than happy?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) February 14th, 2013

Forgive my English, I’ve been letting my brain flow carelessly, but yes, do I prefer being sad? Is there a meter in my brain that tells me I’m more inspired when I’m sad? When I’m happy I’m so carefree I just enjoy the moment and am not really tapped into a creative process. (I’m not ruling out that the latter can be applied, in my case it just doesn’t)

Strange…

I think sadness and inspiration go hand in hand together. I love writing stories, but suffered writer’s block for some time. It sounds strange but just weeks after my grandad died, absolutely loads of story ideas kept popping into my mind! I think we also need to “vent” our sadness – i.e, we need to get our feelings off our chest. When we are happy, we don’t have anything stressing us out that we feel the need to get off our chest.

Creativity is a coping mechanism. When we’re happy we don’t need to cope. When sad, we need to deal with it. One way of dealing is to turn the pain into a source of creativity.

John Lennon said that depression aids the creative process.

@wundayatta Interesting! This need to cope… It’s a healing process then to realize something and talk about it in someway shape or form
