Have you got any good ideas on controlling a bad and persistent nosebleed?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) February 21st, 2013

I’ve tried pressure for a long time, then I let it go for a bit and just let it bleed, but it’s still going. It started about two hours ago. It’s not a hemorrhage, but it keeps going. I also packed it off , three times. It soaked through each time. I’d rather avoid the ER. Any ideas? I did have some sinus issues recently.

Have you tried holding your head back with an ice pack pressed to the top of the nose.

But seriously @Adirondackwannabe don’t you think a two hour nose bleed is cause for concern. I suggest you go to ER to find out what underlying issue(s) could be causing your nose to bleed for such a long time.
Be Well.

Your poor dear. Here is some Info about nosebleeds and what to do about them and when/why to go to the hospital. Right now, you should call the nurse with your medical insurance company if they have that kind of service. I have Kaiser, and they have an 800 number on the back of the insurance card that you can call to get advice as to whether or not to go to the hospital. See if you have something like that either on your card or in your insurance manual.

I hope you heal up soon, sir : )

@AmWiser @Kardamom Thanks for your answers. The third packing did seem to work. It was a pain in the butt going around holding a cotton ball in my nose, but it seems to have stopped it. My BP was fine, but yeah, 2 hours is a long long nosebleed.

Oh thanks all you other jellies. I have a serious bleed and I get two responses. Just kidding. It was making me nervous but it’s okay right now.

Dude!

You had your double vision moment a few weeks ago and now nosebleeds?
Nosebleeds can be a sign of high blood pressure, so can dizziness. I really hope you are seeing your doctor about these strange happenings.
I am worried about you!

You could be on the verge of a stroke or something dreadful.
:-(

@Adirondackwannabe I was just about to write pretty much what @Coloma has posted. It seems to me there might be something else going on. Did you go and have a proper medical – like the whole kit and caboodle done? I think it’s time. We love you and want you to stay around so please go and see your doctor and have them go over you from top to bottom.

Blood thinners like aspirin, plavix and warfarin and similar compounds can also cause bleeding to go on longer than normal. Are you taking any of those?

JLeslie's avatar

Listen to @Coloma. If you are resistant to going to the doctor at minimum buy a blood pressure cuff at the local drug store so you can check it at home twice during the day and especially when you have a nose bleed.

This time of year is nose bleed season, so crazy dry way up there where you live with the heat running all the time. Adding a humidifier to your bedroom might help a little. But, this suggestion does not replace needing to check your blood pressure.

The symptoms, dry skin and membranes, dizzy/spacey, and add in high blood pressure are also all three symptoms of hypothyroidism. Have you been more sleepy lately?

Since you have had sinus issues lately it certainly can be related to that. Although, since the bleed lasted so long I would definitey not just dismiss it as related.

For now don’t drink any alcohol it can thin blood and raise blood pressure.

Lastly, I don’t know much about it, but there are products sold to stop nosebleeds. I think one is caused nasal cease?

I used to get nosebleeds fairly often but haven’t had one in years. When I did get them, I would pack my nostril and hold ice on the bridge of my nose. I would never tilt my head back because then you swallow the blood and it makes you feel ill.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

@Coloma & @JLeslie are giving you good advice. I would add that prolonged pinching the bridge of your nose at the top just below eye level sometimes helps to stop the bleed while, of course, tilting your head back (be sitting when you do this!). It shuts down the capillaries.

A cursory look at your 14,000-odd responses here (in lieu of a chart) show complaints of double vision not long ago, and a spider bite. And weren’t you the one complaining of some kind of sleep disturbance last fall or summer? Something about awakening disoriented, dizzy, memory loss, or something like that? I was going to suggest that you not take any aspirin until you see a doctor as it is a strong blood thinner and will only exacerbate any bleeding you may be experiencing, but since you have have signs of spontaneous paroxysmal hypertension (comes and goes without apparent known cause), and a possible history of Trans-Ischemic Attacks (TIAs), or mini-strokes, I would advise baby aspirin, 81mg (enteric coated, if possible), one every morning only, until you do see a doctor which should be as soon as possible (If you have aches, pains, or a temperature, use Tylenol [Acetometaphen] or Ibuprofen for these—they won’t further thin the blood. If you are on blood thinners already, report this event right away. They need to bring you in for a Prothombin Time [PT], a little blood draw, and re-adjust your anticoag med). Give the doc your full history of these events and any others that may be related. Write them down, with approximate dates and how long each lasted, before you go. A full work up should take place, including a cranial MRI which should reveal any history of blockage which, in turn, should be of enormous concern to the medical team. A temporary, although prolonged, nosebleed due to a little aspirin is preferable to life, if there is any, after a stroke. Good luck. And absolutely no alcohol as the benificial effects are too unpredictable and the potentially harmful ones are many.

Thanks jellies. I have a BP monitor and I test it all the time. I saw my Doc on Tuesday and the BP was fine and she put me through a bunch of neurological tests plus a bunch of blood work. I haven’t got those results back. I let you know if anything comes back bad.

Coloma's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Good to know you are working with your doctor!
Yay! We all woke up alive again today! Good morning jellies! :-D

JLeslie's avatar

Do you bleed a lot if you get a cut or scrape?

I’m going with it is from the dry air or recent sinus trouble, except what is odd is that it wouldn’t stop.

The doc looked up your nose right? I think there is some sort of tumor that can have this symptom? My memory isn’t good. I would think your doctor would know right away if it was that. Not trying to scare you, just thinking out loud.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Coloma @JLeslie Good morning to you. Normally I clot fast. Never been a bleeder unless it’s a serious slice. And yes, I’ve done that accidently. Oh and my Doc is very very thorough. If I can spell that.

JLeslie's avatar

Me too, clot fast. My blood probably barely runs through my veins. I popped two adult aspirins last night because I have been under tremendous stress and I felt like I needed to thin out my blood. LOL. My chest hurt, and I was hoping it was from exercising or indigestion (of course for women that feeling is a sign of a heart attack) and figured the aspirin would help me if it was a clot or just muscle ache, so two birds with one stone.

As @Coloma said, we are all alive, so it’s a good morning.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JLeslie Women’s signs of a heart attack are very very subtle. My grandmother thought she had indigestion for a bit, but they talked her into getting it checked out. She coded in the hospital elevator. She pulled through, but it was so so close.

JLeslie's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Yeah, indgestion, pain in the jaw, tired, it can easily be dismissed. The foundation and research center Barbra Streisand started specifically researches women’s heart disease. Thank goodness, finally. I would gladly donate to them over other choices. Women tend to get blockages in smaller arteries and the symptoms are different. Men can get that type of heart attack also, but it is more common in women.

What I really like about the head researcher there is she said they are investigating better ways to diagnose heart disease in women. They are focused on using MRI, because of the radiation CT delivers. A year ago I had an accident and they CT’d me head to pelvis. I never would have ok’d it if they had told me. I thought they were doing just my neck and chest. They delivered me approx 15 years of background radiation in less than a minute! I am so upet about it even still today. So many doctors and nurses think it is no big deal. You would have to be an idiot to think that is no big deal, sorry. There is a minority of doctors who take radiation from diagnostics seriously. Anyway, the doctor who works at the Barbra Streisand place especially worried about breast cancer regarding the diagnostics.

My guess is research for women will improve it for everyone.

I’m glad to hear that the bleeding stopped, and that you’re taking everything seriously enough that you’ve gone to the doc. We need you here, so no dying allowed!

One of my girls used to have persistent nosebleeds, and what the doctor recommended was the same pinch @Espiritus_Corvus mentioned, but tilting your head forward/down (opposite of all the usual advice) while you’re doing it.

Bellatrix's avatar

My dad said he thought he had indigestion when he had his first heart attack. That’s a very common symptom. I wonder how many of us actually know the first signs of impending stroke or heart attack?

deni's avatar

How much was it bleeding? I am prone to nosebleeds and recently had the heaviest one of my life….it dripped a steady stream into the sink until I made it stop by putting so much pressure on it it had no choice. But, if it starts again, I like to take a cold cloth and put it on my nose and apply a lot of pressure. Don’t give that nosebleed a choice!

In my experience also anytime you tilt your head back instead of forward the only thing you’re doing is creating what will probably be a gnarly blood clot for later in your throat. Those are gross. (Okay but the last one I had I did pull out and it was so big I took a picture. Maybe I’ll make it my avatar to support you. JUST KIDDING gross)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@deni It was bleeding pretty good at times. It would soak a kleenex in about 3 minutes at the worst of it. I went through a lot of them.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I had my arm twisted to call my Dr to check this out. Since it was a one time thing and my blood pressure was fine it’s probably okay. My sinuses are probably just messed up a bit from the previous infection and the conditions this time of year don’t help. But if it happens again I’m to go see them.

JLeslie's avatar

Well, if the doc drew blood she will be able to see if your iron is low, so just checking that is probably worth it.
