Have you damned anyone to hell lately?

Asked by Pachy (18610points) February 26th, 2013

I just read about a GOP congressman who declared that Dick Cheney was going to hell for his war-mongering. That a government representative would say such a thing publicly is bad enough, but does anyone, regardless of his/her religious beliefs, have the right, let alone insight, to damn a fellow human being, no matter what that person has done?

Are you referring to representative Walter Jones’ (North Carolina) comments that Cheney is likely to go to hell because of the Iraq war? Is this what is called “damning” someone to hell, or describing what he will believe will happen to Cheney?

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room: “but does anyone, regardless of his/her religious beliefs, have the right, let alone insight, to damn a fellow human being, no matter what that person has done?”

A right? Do you mean a legal right, as in freedom of speech?

I’m not sure I follow your question. But yes, it is embarrassing that our elected officials are squabbling over the fate of their colleagues in an afterlife. Ouch.

Note: This is the same guy who started the “freedom fries” horseshit, right?

@tom_, forget my word “right” and focus on “insight.” Does anyone have insight so deep as to be able to predict that someone will go to hell? That’s all I’m asking.

I don’t think anyone has that right, but I know a lot of people feel they have that right bestowed on them by the god they are thinking they are following.

(By the way, a true Christian follower of Jesus would never say that, only a self righteous prick who listens to a self righteous right wing minister.)

There was street person in Berkeley back in the 70’s that hung out at the fountain near Sather Gate at UC Berkeley, and proclaimed himself as the reincarnation of Jesus. About every ten minutes he would get annoyed at someone ignoring him, and shout out, “that’s it, you’re damned for all eternity!”

No. I’ve just damned them in the usual way. “Damn you, you idiot!!” Like that.

I only ever say it in my best Charlton Heston voice. So they probably know not to take me too seriously. Well, the voice and the fact that there is no hell.

David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Iain Duncan Smith. They’re all getting it when they kick the bucket. I think that’s justified.

Would anyone honestly believing in such a thing as Heaven, be pleasantly surprised to find Hitler in there having a whale of a time, instead of him being in Hell getting rogered by a strap-on wearing demon?

I don’t think so

Not in the last hour, no.

Only this fucking economy that has me buying the farm as I speak.
I seriously hope this planet just spontaneously combusts before April 1.
I’d rather be dead than lose my house right at tax time.
The trifecta fuck bends Coloma over without even a hint of a kiss and not a drop of Astroglide before the rape of the century.

Then again, I am rising to the challenges at hand, as much as they suck…I’m a survivor!

Damn it ALL to hell and back again 10,000 fold!!!!

That’s not within my power, but I do occasionally hope the Christians are right and there will be a day of judgment. Those I think deserve it, will be found wanting and be sent to hell, which I believe is unreal. I mean, there’s no knowing for sure, and there are people who deserve the wrath of God, if he’s really there.

Damning someone to hell has long since faded from my life since leaving behind the church and my childhood.

The two seem inextricably linked to me. I see this as infantile and it is embarrassing to have our elected officials acting in this manner. But it has long ceased to surprise me. I remember diplomacy and image were something that people considered important once upon a time.

Well if one is religious, they must to know that God alone makes those decisions, and someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think God approves of people damning others to Hell. It’s His job to decide this shit.

But seeing as I don’t believe in God or Hell…I haven’t done it. Although for what it’s worth, I’ve said things to people that might be equal to eternal damnation, at least as far as intent goes.
