Would you like to meet our new dog?

Asked by Plucky (9531 points ) 2 months ago

As some of you know, our dog (Gus) passed away last July at about 16 years of age – from old age/cancer. It was the most significant loss I have ever experienced. I could hardly drag myself out of bed for the two weeks following. My whole world felt empty and broken.

Because I was having such a hard time (and it was getting worse), we decided to start searching for an adoptable dog from shelters/rescues.

We found one that stood out… she was only 8 months old and absolutely adorable. So, after much background checking and interviews..etc, the foster chose us as the right fit for her.

We named her Piper and just love her to pieces! She is such a wonderful little dog. She really brightened up our home again and continues to do so. I was so worried about it being too soon to bring a new dog into our lives but it turned out to be just what we needed. It was exciting but hard at all at once. Bringing her home into our previous dog’s space, with some of his things still around. We are so grateful for this little furry creature and do not regret anything. It’s like she knew about our recent loss…and about the dog who was here before her. Such a sweetie.

She has one ear up and one down about 90% of the time; the other 10% of the time, she has Yoda ears… and loves playing with her toys and us. We are always laughing at her funny little antics. Anyone who meets her thinks she’s almost too adorable (especially with those ears).

So, without further ado (weighing in at a whopping 9.5 lbs), meet Piper.

Thank you for reading my long blurb. I will check later in the day… as I need to get myself to bed!

I know what it feels like to lose a pet…I still can barely talk about my cat, and I lost her about 6 years ago now.
I just noticed the new picture on your profile. She’s adorable.
Good for you for adopting a dog, and much love to you and Piper.

MIlo here; For a dog, she’s not bad. (To be fair, I have to mention that Gail is sitting beside me and laughing at the pictures.)

Thank you so much everyone. I know it’s been awhile since I’ve posted on Fluther, and I was hoping some people would remember :)

As for breed, we were told she’s a Yorkie/Maltese (Gus was a Mini-Schnauzer/Maltese)... Strangely, we actually didn’t realise the similarity in appearance until we were driving home with her, lol. Sort of took us for a loop when we did.

Whomever had her before she went to foster, cared about her (enough to send instructions and notes on how they “trained” her) but didn’t know how to raise a dog properly. They bought her and her brother from a backyard breeder. They smacked her a lot and muzzled her if she barked. Now, if she barks, when she knows she’s not supposed to, she will do a closed mouth bark. Which is cute as heck because she thinks she’s being so smart and getting away with it… but it’s something we are working on. We think they got her in trouble for peeing/pooping often, because she took awhile to get used to the fact that it was ok to do it. She would always look so ashamed after she went.

We will be taking her to obedience classes soon, as we recently realised she needs some work with socializing and confidence around other dogs (especially larger ones). She can be quite reactive in those situations. And, because I’m quite shy, I get embarrassed in public easily and have a difficult time calming/correcting her in front of others. So, the classes will be great for both of us, lol. I’m the dog person in our house, so I do all the training and such. But I think Piper may have converted my partner a bit… from crazy cat lady to a Piper lover! Other than the socialization issues, she’s really wonderful and funny. And, super smart (she learns so quickly)...so I know, with a bit of extra work, she’ll be a model canine citizen in no time :)

What a cutie pie (and I know something about cute pups)! She and the various ear-expressions will give you many years of photographic joy as she seems made for the camera.

Thank you again everyone. This “question” will be taken out, as it’s not a real question. The mods were kind enough to let me introduce our little one to you all. Thank you, it means a lot to me :)
