What are some of your current favorite TV shows?

Asked by jca (36062points) March 10th, 2013

I’m watching the CBS Sunday Morning Show (one of the few TV shows that I attempt to watch on a regular basis, only because I’m almost always home at that time) and the guy is talking about people’s obsessions with TV shows, i.e. Downton Abbey, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, etc.

I don’t watch any of them, because I haven’t the time, but friends and co-workers are always talking about how much they enjoy, in particular two I hear mentioned over and over, Downton and Breaking Bad.

Which shows are a “must see” for you?

The Walking Dead, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Revenge, Survivor, Breaking Bad, Real Time with Bill Maher, Saturday Night Live, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, The Office, Community. Some of these shows we used to watch with our sons when they were living at home and there are a few we watch with our daughter.

We wouldn’t be able to watch all of these shows without a DVR. Sometimes we let several weeks go by before we watch an episode so we can have a mini-marathon when we have the time. We are doing this right now with a new series called Vikings on the History Channel. I’ve heard it’s good. I can’t wait to watch it.

The only current TV show that interests me, is Top Gear UK.
Apart from that, there is only crap in the telly.

Of what’s currently on, only Archer. Game of Thrones will be back soon though!

Coming soon, series two of “Meet the Midwife”
Nova
Nature
Reruns of Julia Childs and Jacques Pépin
Survivor (barely…I use it as background while I do other things)
Reruns of Doc Martin

Argonon's avatar

Seinfeld
Psych
Jeopardy
Wheel of Fortune

Jeopardy is probably the only one I would never miss especially since the rest of my family gets so excited and we all race out in the living room to watch it together.

AshLeigh's avatar

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
NCIS.
Dexter.
Raising Hope.
Impractical Jokers.
Pretty Little Liars.

Downton Abbey
The Office, both versions
30 Rock
Dr Who
Futurama

Archer is such a good rendition of comic book style in animation it excuses the low-life shallow characters. What happens next will either make me laugh or moan, and I keep coming back for more.

I recently discovered Community. I watch each episode online, typically twice in a row, so I can see all of the gags they pack into the background you don’t notice on first viewing.

And I always watch the HBO series when they’re on:

Elementary (1 hot British guy and one hot Lucy Liu, love Sherlock Holmes mysteries)

Sherlock (2 hot British guys, compelling stories and dialogue)

Downton Abbey (soap opera at it’s best, and because it’s British, it’s not cheesy, plus the clothes, the clothes and the clothes! And Dame Maggie Smith)

Happily Divorced (TV Land, starring the gorgeous Fran Drescher living out a fictional account of her real life, complete with gay husband)

Body of Proof (kind of like Sherlock Holmes meets NCIS, plus Dana Delaney is gorgeous, and the ensemble cast is remarkable)

The Big Bang Theory (I laugh until I piddle myself. Nerds on parade, with outstanding dialogue)

NCIS (the one with Mark Harmon, most beautiful ensemble cast on TV, plus Tiva gets me all hot and bothered)

Glee (2 words: Chris Colfer)

House Hunters (HGTV, I actually go to open houses for fun)

Love it or List It (HGTV, I have a wee crush on host David, and love the chemistry between David and Hilary)

Diners Drive-ins and Dives (Food Network, makes my mouth water and want to go on a food/travel vacation)

I generally don’t watch any shows while they’re running. I prefer to just wait until the season or a few seasons are over and then marathon it , if its a show I’m particularly fond of I’ll catch up every couple weeks like Archer or Clone Wars. I make one exception to this rule. Breaking Bad. I wish I could wait until the end of the season to watch it but the show is just so damn good I need to see every ep as soon as I can. This of course drives me nuts when the show ends cause I have to wait a whole week to find out wtf is going to happen next.

@uberbatman You’re not watching Young Justice? It is amazing!

Psych

On Hiatus:
American Horror Story

I was watching Game of Thrones, Ugly Americans and Community, but I don’t have the time to keep up with them now. I’ll probably Netflix them later.

Notes:

The UK and US version of The Office are counted together since a vote for “The Office” is ambiguous. If you said you watch both versions two tallies were added to the Office.

I didn’t include shows I know to be canceled, but I probably included some I’m just not familiar with.

I added tallies for Bill Maher and Rachel Maddow because I always catch the podcast versions of their shows, though I didn’t mention it before.

LET NO ONE SAY THERE IS NOTHING ON TV

mangeons's avatar

I record every show that I like to keep up with on my DVR, because I rarely actually catch them when they’re on. I’m also watching a few on Netflix at the moment, trying to get caught up. Some I just catch whenever I see them on TV. My favorites are:

Pretty Little Liars
Bunheads
New Girl
The Mindy Project
Glee
Teen Wolf
Once Upon a Time
What Not to Wear
Degrassi
Friends (I know it’s been cancelled for ages, but I still watch it practically every single night!)
CSI
Law and Order: SVU

I’m a teenage girl, so I’m sure some of the shows I love to watch seem ridiculous to a lot of people here ;)

fundevogel's avatar

@mangeons Pshaw. Nothing wrong with being a teenage girl and there’s nothing wrong with what you enjoy.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@wildpotato I guess I’ll have to check it out again. I got pretty annoyed with the show when they started just jumping to random points in time with no explanation. It was as they wrote themselves into a corner and said fuck it, lets just reboot the show 5 years in the future.

filmfann's avatar

Has no one mentioned South Park or News Room?

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@filmfann Sorry. We have seen Community.

JLeslie's avatar

Newsroom is excellent! I am not getting that channel anymore, but I hope to in the future primarily for that show. I can’t belive I didn’t think of it @filmfann.

jonsblond's avatar

Shows I forgot to list:

South Park, Simpsons, Dance Moms (I watch with my daughter), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Veep, Chopped, Hell’s Kitchen, Master Chef. (yes, I do have a life)

El_Cadejo's avatar

Is community any good anymore? I was really into that show and then the new season go put off so much and then Chevy Chase left. Not really sure how good it can be still. Opinions?

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@uberbatman It is still the same. Ok episode, Unbelievable episode, okay episode. I think it is a thing to pretend it has changed, but they have always had a few weak episodes here and there surrounded by amazing episodes.

mangeons's avatar

I forgot all about Food Network shows! Whenever my sister is home from school, we end up watching a lot of Food Network. We love DC Cupcakes, Chopped, Iron Chef, and of course Sweet Genius! There’s just something about Ron Ben-Israel… he’s so hilarious! I love him. I really miss Ace of Cakes, it used to be one of my favorite Food Network shows!

I also love TLC’s “reality” shows, like Say Yes to the Dress, Breaking Amish, Toddlers and Tiaras, Dance Moms, etc. All the shows you love to hate! Except for Honey Boo Boo… I just can’t make myself watch that show.

jonsblond's avatar

I love Sweet Genius! Ron Ben-Israel is so quirky. I like him too @mangeons.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought that’s good to hear cause I really loved that show. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Grey’s Anatomy is my current favourite. For a bit of British humour I am loving Being Eileen right now.

wildpotato's avatar

@uberbatman Thank you for mentioning Clone Wars. I missed that one, somehow – now am six episodes deep. Lovely brain candy.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@wildpotato I gotta say this season for the most part was crap. Soooo much filler. But there is one arc that makes the whole season worth it. Soooo bad ass :P
