Did you file through H&R Block? If so, you won’t be getting your refund anytime soon.

I asked a similar question yesterday and have since found out some useful information. Everyone that filed through H&R Block before 2/22 and is getting education credits will be receiving a letter within the next few weeks requesting that you fill out that form again and resubmit it. This is because the H&R Block software did not print a check in the box indicating you have never been convicted of a felony.

It might take 3–4 weeks just to get this letter and another 6–8 weeks to get your refund after the IRS has received the amended form. So, you and I and a whole lot of other people may be waiting 3 more months for our money. Some TurboTax users are also having these issues.

You can call the IRS to see if your return is in the errors department and if you’ll be receiving a letter, but that’s all the information they’ll give you.

If you didn’t file with H&R Block or TurboTax, call and see what the hold up is. The education credit form was not accepted by the IRS until mid-February. When was your return accepted? It can take up to 21 days after the acceptance before you get your money. You can use the Where’s My Refund tool on the IRS website to check on the status of your return.

The IRS is having a lot of problems with this year’s returns due to the last minute fiscal cliff deal. It’s a huge mess and a shit load of taxpayers are the ones suffering by not receiving our money in a timely manner. But don’t expect to be compensated for your lost time or money – it is the government after all.

Oof. I submitted on February 15th (well, technically before but the IRS didn’t accept it until then) and got my refund before the end of February. So they definitely should be getting to you, unless you fell into that H&R block question. Oh, and I used TurboTax, so that worked just fine.

And while the IRS has been a mess this year, they’ve been pretty good except for accepting forms late, and that particular problem is hardly their fault, @livelaughlove21. If anyone should compensate those people for the lost time it should be H&R block.

I’ve got an update on the H&R Block situation. I called the agent that filed for us and she said that the IRS is telling people that there was an issue with the H&R Block transmission, but this is not true because their system will not transmit the return if those boxes are not checked. She looked at my return to double check and, yes, the boxes are marked. Apparently this is a problem with the IRS’s system, not the H&R Block system. She said corporate has been on the phone with the IRS since this happened trying to figure everything out. According to her, yesterday the IRS decided to go ahead and process these returns in the order they were accepted. She said that if I didn’t have my check within a week, to call her back to see if there was any more news.

I’m not sure if my leg is being pulled or if this is the whole truth, but she says they will not be sending these letters out after all – they are just going ahead and processing the returns. We’ll see! I’m hoping for the best.
