What can cause severe cramping, vomiting and diarrhea?

My 6 year old grandson was hit with it this morning. It finally eased up after a couple of hours. He never vomited. Mom has it now, but she’s vomiting till there is nothing left, and now she’s cramping really bad.
It isn’t food. They haven’t had the same things to eat.
