What is the cause of my nausea?

Asked by Carinaponcho (1381points) March 24th, 2013 from iPhone

I’ve been feeling very nauseous for the past few hours. I thought it may have been because my period started today. It could be hormones or pain. But it also crossed my mind that maybe it is being caused by something I ate today. My salad at dinner did look a little suspicious.

Update: I just threw up a few times and now I feel fine.

Carinaponcho's avatar

Another update: I didn’t feel fine. I threw up two more times. I have chills and am feeling very lightheaded.
I think it’s a safe bet that this is a stomach bug of some sort? What do you think.

Third update: I threw up two more times. When will this torture end?

Sip water (if you can keep it down) – you don’t want to dehydrate. Get to a clinic or your doctor soon as you can. Could be food poisoning.

Do you have a high fever? If you do I think you should go to the emergency room. That is not a stomach flu (virus) that is likely some sort of food poisining (bacteria). If you don’t have a fever you can probably wait it out.

I say do not drink water if every time you drink it you throw it up. You are old enough that you won’t dehydrate in a few hours. Dehydration is a huge concern for infants and young children. Wait 3–4 hours before drinking anything. Most somach flus are bad 3–4 hours but can still be throwing up for about 12, feel crappy for 24. If you feel very thirsty and cannot keep anything down then go to the ER to get IV fluids, but adults rarely need this meaure for a typical stomach flu.

Check your temperature. What was the salad you had? Do you know how to check for dehydration.

bookish1's avatar

Please follow above advice about checking your temperature and staying hydrated.
But know that nausea, chills, dizziness, and vomiting sometimes do accompany menstruation. I had all of those.

Carinaponcho's avatar

I have thrown up five or six more times. It now only happens when I get up to go to the bathroom.

@Carinaponcho Call your Doctor. This is going on too long. Somethings messed up. Any pain or tenderness on the right side of your abdomen?

Carinaponcho's avatar

None specifically on the right. It’s just overall stomach pain.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Okay, right side could be your appendix, but that sounds like it’s not. This may get gross. Any blood in the vomit? Any other symptoms? You’re not taking aspirin are you?

Carinaponcho's avatar

No blood in vomit. Bowel movement are often but normal.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho Okay, that sounds better. It’s either a bug or something you ate most likely. Pinch the skin on your forearm to see if it’s still elastic. If it doesn’t spring back you’re dehydrated. That’s a sign to get attention fast. Try some ginger ale if you have it.

Carinaponcho's avatar

Skin is still elastic

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho Okay good. Keep an eye on that. I had bad food poisoning a while ago. Three days of just moving to expell stuff. Hang in there. I’m thinking just a bug that’s going around. Don’t take tums or rolaids unless you really feel the need. Try the ginger ale. Small sips over time.

Carinaponcho's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe okay thank you so much.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho You’re more than welcome. As long as you watch the hydration and your electrolytes you should be okay after your body overcomes whatever this is. It’s just not a fun time. :)

Carinaponcho's avatar

It’s been almost twelve hours since it started and I’m still throwing up. My mom says that if it continues to tonight I will go to the doctor.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho That’s the safe way. I used to be one never to go to the Dr. I had to learn not to do that the hard way.

Carinaponcho's avatar

I’m starting to feel a bit better maybe. I’m sucking on ice cubes. It’s something I’ve been doing when I had this since I was little. So that I stay hydrated but don’t drink the water too quickly.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho Good. I hate stomach bugs.

Carinaponcho's avatar

I’m feeling much better

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho Good. Be careful for a bit. But it sounds much much better.

Try some saltine crackers in tiny pieces and only a little at a time. See if this helps your stomach, the sodium in the crackers will help with dehydration too. Sometimes the stomach becomes so empty that only bile exists and this can cause vomiting and pain. Hope you’re right as rain tomorrow!

Stick to the BRAT diet: Bananas, rice (white), applesauce, toast (plain)

@Carinaponcho How are you feeling today?

Carinaponcho's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Thank you for asking. I was able to sleep through the night with only one exception when I woke up but immediately went back to sleep. I slept until about half an hour ago. So far, I’m feeling pretty good. I’m a bit dizzy but not nauseous. I ate a few crackers and some water.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho Take it easy today. That’s going to take a lot out of you for a while. Glad to hear you’re gaining.

Carinaponcho's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Thank you! I plan to spend the day in front of the tv.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Carinaponcho Good. I always try to push too hard after an illness and then I’m vulnerable to another one. Pay attention to what your body is telling you and it’s okay to be a bum for a day or two. :)

@Carinaponcho : So sorry to hear about your ordeal.
Do you know if you have a history of endometriosis in your family?

@bookish1 I’ve never heard of it. I have no idea.

Endometriosis is a thickening of the uterus lining that can cause some of the symptoms you’ve described. Some theories of how it’s caused includes not fully dispelling the lining through a menstrual cycle and over the years it can build up to cause a lot of pain and nausea. Many women suffer from this and describe similar symptoms. It might be worth it to tell your doctor (OB/GYN & PCP) about this bout you’ve just gone through on your next appointment.
