How to get rid of side stitches?

Asked by RandomGirl (3362points) March 26th, 2013 from iPhone

I’ve recently taken up jogging.
I’m in decently good shape, although I’m not surprised that it’s taking some work to get started.
I’m being careful to breathe right, stretch beforehand, stay hydrated, and warm up.
I’m still getting side stitches, though. What am I forgetting?
Is it just because I’m just getting started? Will it get better?

Try this. Lay on your back with a comfortable weight in your hands. Extend your arms straight out over your chest and slowly move your arms over your head until the weight is on the floor and then go back to the weight over your chest. Repeat. This builds your lung capacity in amazing ways. Try it. If I did it three times I could tell the difference.

That sounds like a good idea! I’ll have to try it. Thanks!

@RandomGirl The side stitches are from a lack of oxygen. If you build lung capacity it should cut back on the stitches. Plus it gives you amazing abs. :)

As you get into shape the side stitches will go away.

Most say they are from running on a full stomach. Try running on empty and see what happens. Also on runnersworld.com, you can find many articles on the subject.

In my personal experience, buckle down and push through.
