Help me understand a thing about videos games.

Asked by Sarah90 (373points) March 31st, 2013

Why is it that,I can play Gears of War,Call of Duty,God of War,BioShock, etc…. on a $300~$400 PS3 & Xbox 360 with no problem at all with high-quality graphics in 1080p resolution but if I wanted to play the same games in a PC. I would need extensive as well as expensive gear (at least 8Gb RAM,$400 each, dual graphic cards.. etc…) otherwise there would be a lag in the game play?

Screen Resolution is not everything. In fact, Screen Resolution is a minor Component in what defines the Performance.
The Differences between Console and PC Versions are:
– Console Versions have low Resolution Textures, lowering Memory Requirements.
– Console Versions have far less Objects on the Screen at any given Moment.
– Console Versions have far less Particles in Particle Effects.
– Console Versions have lower Quality/Resolution in Effects such as Ambient Occlusion, GI, and Shadows, as well as Shaders for Effects such as Water or Reflections. Sometimes, these Effects are missing altogether.
– Often, Console Versions are rendered at a lower Resolution, and are then merely upscaled to the Screen Resolution (which results in a blurry Picture).
– Often, too, the PC Versions of Games are just Console Versions Ported to PC, with substandard Optimisation, resulting in a significant Performance Impact.

LOL… “high quality graphics”!

For illustration, the beta of Battlefield 3 for Xbox was 1.3GB. IT was about 4GB for PC.

The difference? Textures.

Oh, and Xbox is limited to 24 players. You get 64 on PC.

The graphics of consoles will never compare to that of PC games. I also think you have your prices a bit off. I picked up 16gb ram for 90 bucks and an amazing graphics card that can render any game i throw at it on max settings for $270

LOOOOOOOL

You think consoles are better for gaming?

Oh god, let me catch my breath.

Ok, trust me its way cheaper to have a PC for gaming, for one you can upgrade it as games come along, and PC games tend to be cheaper than console specific games, not to mention the huge gap in performance and graphics when comparing a PC to a console.

*Sigh !!
Y’now it never fails, every time that I ask a question concerning computers or hi-tech in general !

I always have to get a couple of responses from condescending, smart-a**** drama queens.
I guess you two must be blue blood billionaires that have become accustom to expect and demand only the very best therefore you don’t consider consoles games as being worthy to be referred as having high quality graphics as it pales in comparison to your tens of thousands set-up.

Let me guess,,, you two play video games only using an IBM Blue Gene computer hooked up to Godzillatron otherwise there better be a fainting couch nearby for you two southern belles as you’ll be overcome by the vapors !!!

{Last week, I posted a comment stating that I would be upgrading my home WI-fi to 50Mbps.
A drama queen posted the following exaggerated, gasping comment : OMG,,,OMG 50 Mbps ????? Gawd,...... I would just cry if I only had a 50 Mbps internet speed !!! Poor you !!
50 Mbps caused this drama queen to gasp for air….. I drew the same conclusion about this person as I have for the two of you.}

Hi,
I don’t think you should have any problem. However, I think this is mainly because of high quality graphics.
Take your time and I am sure you will be able to play the same game on your PC as well.

@Sarah90 Wow, nce b****y assumptive attitude you got there.

FYI I’m playing on a fairly old system, only a core 2 quad, or equivalent to a core I3, it only cost me 300 bucks but with the decent video card I have in it,it blows any console out of the water, get in touch with reality, it doesn’t tale much to beat the shit hardware they call consoles, so check your attitude and do some research before assuming.

@Sarah90 – My computer cost me a fair amount, but then I expect it to last for at least five years running games at higher quality settings than the new generation of consoles (PS4, Durango, etc.) before it becomes my home server for as long as it survives (for illustration, my previous computer, now serving that function, is 8 years old and still going strong).

The reason I loled is that you asserted something that was clearly not the case, and 10 seconds on Google would have shown you.

For illustration, this is the system I’m running. I bought it in Japan, so prices are slightly different. It was also a gradual build. the GPU and the SSD were bought first and attached to my older system.

MSI Z68-G43 – $90.

Intel Core i7 2600K CPE – $320 (cost me about $250 in Japan)

GTX670 2GB Graphics card – $350 (cost me $300 in Japan)

120GB SSD – $100

Everything else was carried over from my last PC. In total, then, I spent $750 a year ago on a machine that will outperform the new consoles when they come out later this year.

I consider that money well-spent. Furthermore, I can do other things than consume media on a PC. It’s not just for games, is it?

Incidentally, make sure you don’t see Bioshock Infinite on PC before you play it on console; it will spoil the experience.

@the100thmonkey I’ve been playin Bioshock a lot lately on my new comp. Beautiful game. Huge difference compared to console.

I can’t say I’ve had any off the issues the author of that video talks about, video or otherwise and I’m playing with all settings maxed out. Wonder if its just his comp.

Though a little unrealistic, I found Inner Vision pretty powerful, just because of that music. Not enough people value good sound direction.
