What is chicken mash and how does one make it?

Asked by DaphneT (5750points) April 3rd, 2013

We have chickens, and I’ve been reading some older books on the topic of care and feeding. These books reference chicken mash, however they are unclear about how to make it. Does any Flutherite know?

It’s just chicken feed that is in the powdery, ground form rather than pellets. If you haven’t seen the Backyard Chickens website, you should check it out, lots of good info!

I don’t know about chicken mash specifically but when exotic bird people speak of mash it generally refers to a mix they make themselves. If you google “how to make chicken mash” you will find numerous recipes. I prefer to make my own for my cockatoo because I want to know what it is eating and I want it to be fresh, not some dried up stuff. Since you probably eat the eggs and/or the chooks themselves, that would be the best way to go.
