Is Hackney, London as bad as people make it seem?

People tell me not to go to Hackney when I get a chance to go to London.

Hackney is like a lot of areas in London in that there are some areas that you should probably avoid while at the same time has areas that are very (very) desirable to live. Often very close to each other.
