What do you think about this convicted murderer suing his victim's widow?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) April 11th, 2013

This news story recounts the facts. A man convicted of killing his business associate is now suing his victim’s widow.

In response, legislation has been proposed requiring convicts to get the court’s permission before they can conduct legal action against their victim or victim’s families.

What is he sueing for?

The widow and her victim’s advocate and some friends testified at a hearing against letting him serve his sentence in Canada (where he’s from). He’s suing for defamation of character among other things.

“He’s suing for defamation”

Um, it isn’t defamation if it’s true. Certainly, the criminal justice system is flawed, but the conviction under criminal law will hold up as the truth.

I think the victim’s family should be able to whack him with a 2×4 once for each dollar he is suing for.

It makes me think Americans deserve some kind of discount on the price we pay for the “freedom” of our system.

I think it’s completely ridiculous, and she should file a counter suit for him being a dumbass.

That is simply preposterous.

This is just an excuse to make a profit.

You can sue for anything – if you can convince a lawyer to file fro you from prison. But winning is a totally different story. I don’t know the facts, and I am not a lawyer, but I would think this guy has a pretty poor chance of winning.

@elbanditoroso Apparently, he is acting as his own attorney.

Is it allowable in Canada to have his balls cut off and stuffed down his throat? Just wondering ‘cause that would be my verdict if I was on the jury for this.
