How would you describe this person?

Asked by Feta (930points) April 13th, 2013

I have this stepmom and I don’t know a word to describe her.

She thinks she’s perfect and the most intelligent woman in the world.

But she’s rude and I would even say subpar intelligence wise.

She’s sort of antisocial, she likes to think that she’s just too “real” and people don’t understand her and that’s why she doesn’t have friends.
Like, she always gets in trouble at work for saying things, and she’ll come home and complain to me and my dad as if she doesn’t understand why she got in trouble.
I even asked her if she thought people could be genuinely nice right-off, and she said no. She said people that you don’t know that are nice to you are fake.

She’s almost 60 and she’s really irrational. I was explaining to my dad how annoying my Economics teacher is and gave an animated example of how he yells at us and then laughs because he thinks he has power…anyway, she came running in like, “Oh my God, what’s wrong? I heard yelling, what’s wrong?”

She’s always like that. If she stubs her toe or something stupid like that, she’ll yell out and continue yelling until my dad comes to her rescue. We were watching American Idol awhile ago and I was talking to my dad when it came on, and she freaked out because she didn’t hear if the girl was “safe” or not, even though everyone was cheering. She was just like, “OH MY GOD, I DIDN’T SEE IT. I DIDN’T HEAR IT, WHAT HAPPENED, WHAT’S GOING ON? WHY ARE YOU TALKING ANYWAY YOU WATCH TV WITH YOU EARS.”

And she’s super-Christian…here recently. I used to say “Jeez” all the time and she never had a problem with it. The other day she was rushing me to get ready to go out and saying I take too long to put my makeup on, and then just as we were heading out the door, she decides she wants to read the mail. So I said, “Jesus, can we just go?”
She went through the roof. She said I’m forbidden to use the Lord’s name in vain in her house and that she hopes I “choke on my rebellion”.

And that’s another thing. I’m a straight-A student, I don’t do drugs, I’m not promiscuous, I hardly ever even whine about anything, and yet she thinks I’m a rebel.

My two guy friends came over last weekend and we walked down the street without telling my dad. We’ve done it before, so I didn’t think they would care.

I got into a lot of crap for it. Because I texted them while we were walking and they said be back before dark. And I got home like 5 minutes after the sun went down. Apparently that was “disrespectful”, so now I’m homebound.

And yet, her granddaughter who is around my age wrecked her car about a month ago, her mom wouldn’t pay for it, so she went to live with her boyfriend and told her mom she wasn’t coming back until she fixed her car.

I mentioned that I could be doing stuff like that, but I’m not.

And my stepmom threw it in my face that her granddaughter is 18 so she can do whatever she wants, if I tried to do that she would send me back to live with my mother.

Now, if I told my dad that she said that, she would deny it to her grave. And he would believe it.

To her, and him, she can do no wrong.

I just can’t think of a word for her. She’s childlike, annoying, a liar, hypocritical…and yet she and my dad and her parents think she is sent from heaven.
She even told me last night that she thinks she’s a gift from God because she’s a social worker.

How would you describe her?

She sounds like a Drama Queen. Would it be possible for you to have a private chat with your dad about how she treats you, and remind him that you are an A-student and stay out of trouble? Would it be possible for you to go and live with you mother?

Otherwise, your only chance is to stay out of her way, know that she flips out about certain things (and try to remember what those things are and avoid doing/saying them around her) and always try to be more than prepared ahead of time, then move out as soon as you can financially afford to do so. Good luck, dear.

I almost wonder if she’s showing signs of dementia….

I believe that because of the relationship ( step) that she is trying to include herself in your ralationship with your father.
She feels slighted, I think.
The role of a step parent would be easier IF they would understand that children from a previous spouse do not appreaciate a ‘Step” parent taking on the role of replacing that parent.
Rather she should try and become your friend instead, where dicipline is religated to the father not her as you would not take to her interferance anyways. ( as usually in blended step families).
She was very wrong to ‘threaten’ you with taking you back to your mother etc
By saying this to you, she is perhaps airing her ‘wish”?
And does not help your relationship one bit.
She wants your fathers attention all to herself and perhaps she did not expect to share it?

She sounds a bit harsh in her treatment of others?
She displays a directness that lacks compassion and understanding of anothers feelings beside her own.(immature).
I believe that she thinks that she is doing everyone a favor, since no one has confronted nor corrected her on her communication style, that of being direct and ignoring emotions other than anger?

I have encountered such people as that and it took many years for them to realize that they were hurting others through their harsh treatment and ignorant behavior.
They can change ONLY WHEN they decide too.
Sometimes just hearing how they sound, will wake them up, other times not.
She probably sees you as a rival?
In the end IF she is open to suggestion she will change her style or become more aware of her bevavior.
Short of that go ahead and speak with her Minister about her behavior when communicating to others either at home or at work.
Perhaps as a third unbiased party He then would point out the error of her ways politely?
( since she is religious?)
