I feel like my colonoscopy prep isn't doing anything?

Asked by Tequila (337points) April 14th, 2013

I drank something called Pico-Salax this morning at 11 am. Then at 1 pm I took 4 Dulcolax pills, and 4 more at 3 pm. I have one more sachet of the Pico-Salax to drink. It’s 4 pm and I’ve only gone to the bathroom a few times, very little each time. I have severe abdominal cramps and I feel nauseous and gassy. Is it not working? I thought I’d be glued to my toilet all day. I’m afraid I won’t be cleaned out enough.

Ducolax takes 6 to 12 hours, I don’t know about the other med. Ican tell you that is a lot of Ducolax assuming you don’t have any factors that would constipate you more than the average person, so I most likely you will be rushing to the toilet soon. I don’t mean it is a lot for a colonscopy, I just mean in general.

If you hear gurgling in your tummy and are having cramps my bet is it is working.

Did you read over all the materials they gave you? It might state how long it will take to start needing to use the bathroom. Although, I am sure it varies by individual. Call your doctor if you a concerned and ask when it should start taking effect.

Just keep drinking clear liquids like water.

Wait. It takes a while to accumulate the effect.

And some point soon, you’ll be rushing to the join and outputting copious amounts off all sorts of shit.

May the farts be with you.

You can always purchase a bottle of Fleet Enema today as a (pardon the pun) backup.
If everything else fails, the enema used as directed will clear out your colon and despite the awkwardness of using it, the results are not too extreme and typically not uncomfortable.

I hope everything comes out all right. (Sorry again)

Do as the doctor ordered and everything will come out in the end… trust us.

I can’t wait to hear what you say tomorrow. My guess is you are not going to get much sleep tonight.

I had the same worry, but it worked out OK.

Before my recent colonoscopy, I had to drink a gallon of laxative, 8 ounces every 15 minutes.

Three hours in, I was worried something was wrong. I was just getting really, really full.

And soon, Oh my, it started working. Really, really well.

I was really, really cleaned out for the test, I have pictures to prove it!

@Tequila – your colonoscopy prep sure sounds a lot more humane than mine was.
It started with a few pills (stool loosener, like dulcolax) but then like @jaytkay refers to I had a gigantic plastic container (it says it made a gallon..but it felt like more) called GoLytely.
You can see what it looks like here.

You’d drink this gad-awful tasting (like warm salt water with a fake citrus flavor on top) stuff every 15 minutes for HOURS. It resulted in definitely cleansing me out. It’s all-too effective.

So, if you didn’t have to have this (GoLYTELY or NuLYTELY) consider yourself lucky!

@geeky_mama The good thing about the liquid is you have more control to stop drinking it if you have been shitting clear liquid for hours already. With the pills you take them and wait, and if they are extremely violent on your body you are at the mercey of what is already in your sistem, and that much ducolax can be bad. You might have seen me fight with our resident doctor here on fluther about people being overmedicated for colonscopies. 4 ducolax, and then 4 more is a scary amount of ducolax to me. What I mean is for me. It might be necessary for other people. My mom almost wound up in the emergency room taking that.

@JLeslie oh, how I wish I’d known about Fluther and could have asked you before my colonoscopy..because I was told to drink the entire 4L bottle..and it never occurred to me that I could stop once I was only getting clear liquid out my bum. It was total and complete misery drinking that stuff.
