When convention catches up with the technology, what will be proper etiquette regarding public cell phone use?

Asked by josie (30934points) April 18th, 2013

I am not that old, and even I find myself grousing like a grumpy old man when people let their phones go off at a wedding, text while walking down the street (and into me), and talk in a loud voice to the invisible (sort of the way schizophrenics do) as they meander down the aisle at the grocery store.

I am a bit rough around the edges myself, but I can hardly believe how rude it all seems to be.

Someday, social convention will catch up with technology. What will be OK cell phone behavior? What will be inappropriate?

Anyone standing within hearing distance of someone who talks WAY TOO LOUD on their phone, will be given special legislation to insert said phone up the arsehole of said offender.

It has nothing to do with age, I’m 24 and find the same things highly annoying. It’s just shit manners. I don’t know that social convention will catch up to be honest and I see things like these will only make it worse. At least now when someone is blowing off your conversation and looking at their phone you know it. With those damn glasses people will be looking forward but be in a whole different world.

I’m sitting in the hairdressers but I finished up my call before I came in. I guess I should probably turn the ringer off now.

There is a Silent mode for a reason; more people need to use it!

I think part of it is showing off. Years ago, when cellphones were brick-sized things, people used to put fake antennas on their cars to falsely announce to the world, “Hey, look at me! I’m so rich and trendy that I have a phone in my car! Aren’t you jealous that I am more awesome than you?”. Then there was people brandishing their Blackberries when other people had phones that were only phones. Now it’s more like, “I have an (iPhone/Razr/S3) while you have a cheap piece of crap.”. People ignore the fact that many other people also have the same thing.

There is also an element of, “The world revolves around me; nobody else matters, and they only exist for my convenience, so fuck ‘em; I’ll do what I want!”.

I’ve given up all hope of ever being able to spend 10 minutes anywhere out-of-doors without passing or standing near somebody yacking on a cell phone. Even that last refuge from telephone chatter, the commercial airplane, will soon be a thing of the past. Get used to it, folks. As bad as it is now, it can only get worse as more and more people own cell phones. Cell phone etiquette? Fuggedaboutit.

@uberbatman – My cousin just posted today that there’s a new word:
“Glasshole” – A person who constantly talks to their Google Glass, ignoring the outside world.

I think that the cell phone will trump the person standing in front of you. How many times has the person you are talking to interrupted your conversation to answer the goddam phone? It is already at that point and I don’t believe the impetus is there to change things.

Dude, so much of what those damn kids do with their newfangled gadgets seems rude to me, and I am just 24 years old.

Sometimes I have to restrain myself from smacking phones out of kids’ hands while they are sitting in lecture. But, ya know, their daddies are paying for their eddication, so they don’t need to pay attention, be respectful, or learn the value of money.
