Did my dog have a seizure?

Asked by Tequila (337points) April 22nd, 2013

I’ve noticed my dog lately has been snoring while sleeping and making some strange noises. Today she was sleeping beside me and started making snorting noises, so I picked her up and her head flopped backwards and her eyes rolled back in her head. It was scary and seemed like a seizure. She is over 12 years old and she’s a toy poodle. She seems fine now. I know she is towards the end of her life. :(

It sounds to me as if she was deeply, soudly asleep. If you are unsure, give your veterinarian a call.

If you have a sturdy constitution, you can search “seizure activity in dogs” for some videos, but be aware that they tend to be distressing to watch.

Usually a seizure would be accompanied by spasms in the dogs body. Yes the eyes do roll back but this can also happen when the dog is in a deep sleep. In addition to this, some dogs actually move and snort in their sleep when they are dreaming. I know my dog sometimes will give a kick or two when he’s sound asleep and then he’s back to normal. If you are concerned still, I’d give a quick call to your vet and get a professional opinion from someone who knows the dog and her current conditions.
