As the question asks, which is your proffered drive-train in cars performance wise?

4wd for me, used correctly it can keep you out of trouble in the winter driving conditions we get here.

If you want a personalized answer you need to tell us your climate, your intended use, type of vehicle, and if you have another vehicle available for normal driving.
I live in an area that gets alot of snow. I rarely go off-roading but occasionally need to pull trees or haul wood. I tow a 6000 pound trailer occasionally. This is not my only vehicle. So… .
I drive 4WD Tahoe Z71. The mileage is horrible but I only put about 5000 miles per year on it so the total cost is low. I keep the transmission is 2 HI to improve economy and only use 4 HI when I am in the snow. I use 4 LO when pulling trees or cars out of ditches.
That truck is perfect for me.

As a German, I only use proper tank treads, forged by strong, blond, blue eyed aryan men from pure German steel.

AWD on both vehicles. Live in coastal plain of North Carolina, work great for wet roads. If it snows, the city is shutdown because they don’t have anything to move the snow of the streets.

AWD even though we get Very little snowfall because , years back when we lived near Little Rock, it snowed like crazy. Our heat went off and we had to go to a motel for a week. On the way home when the heat was back on we were driving on packed snow and ice which at first scared me to death and that thing didn’t move an inch. I was so impressed I fell in love with AWD. Haven’t had it since , though because we get almost no snow here.

4WD is my least favorite as it’s the least controllable. AWD offers all of the benefits of 4WD with far fewer drawbacks. If you like being able to corner in slippery conditions or recover from a skid, don’t even consider 4WD.

RWD has many advantages in performance, but also requires more driving skill than most people have in order to even commute in any conditions where drivetrain makes a difference. The average driver in a RWD in slippery conditions is a danger to everyone.

@Aster Stay as far away from New England as possible. If that scared you, you would never survive a NH winter (from October to May).
