How much fruits and vegatables are needed to cancel out McDonalds and KFC every day?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) April 28th, 2013

So I found out that fast food can be delivered for a $10 fee in my town… and I admit I took advantage of the deal, but now I feel like I am saving money by walking by the scary part of town myself. So I would like to know how much good food should I buy each day to offset my fast food appetite, (I order a single hamburger with cheese from McDonalds then I walk half a block down the street and I go to KFC and I order a drumstick and a thigh and a small pop. Together It runs me $10 a day… exactly the $10 I would have spent on delivery, and I put that extra ten bucks a day into healthy food. I am currently spending $300 a month on fast food and that leaves $300 a month on healthy food.

I refuse to not eat fast food and I would like to know what healthy foods I can eat from Sobeys food store to balance out my food intake. Also Exercise is not on the list to things to do in the short run. I am 6’5” 280 lbs. and 35 years old and on disability.

Just enough to ‘poop” out the bad stuff.

Wow, your fast food budget is more than my food budget.
With $10, you could buy ingredients to cook yourself food for two or three days.
I don’t think that nutrition works in terms of “canceling out” unhealthful food. Sounds like magical thinking to me. Eating fast food every day is not healthful, no matter how many salads you pile on afterward.

A classic Western fallacy.
There is no cancelling out. There is no “making up” for an episode of stress to the organism.

Once the damage is done, it is done.

There is no going back.

You can’t make up for a meal at McDonald’s, you can’t make up for missing a night’s sleep etc. etc.

If there was, we would all probably “go back” to someplace.

That’s not how it works. You can’t cancel out or make up for bad food with good food. You’d just need to account for those fast food calories in your daily intake and spend the rest of the day eating more nutritious foods in order to get what your body needs. It won’t, however, negate the empty calories, fat, and sodium you’re putting into your body – you’ll just be eating less the rest of the time.

You don’t have to cut out fast food completely, but eating it daily is the equivalent of digging yourself an early grave. Everything in moderation.

If you are spending $300/month on junk and fast food, save the other $300 monthly for your bypass heart surgery.

$600/month for food for one person?

@gailcalled I’m still learning how to shop for cheap healthy food… Fruit is the easiest replacement for fast food.. Blackberries and bananas, canned salmon, fruit pie and chocolate bars and replacement meal drinks, Is what I eat. I also eat powerbars and a glass of water as a snack. I don’t drink alcohol or smoke, I don’t have any dependents to look after, I have no other expenses other than rent and bundled t.v. , home phone and internet. As soon as I can switch to corn and carrots frozen vegetables then I can save money again. I take the bus now and I got shopping to more places.

Eat good food until you’re not hungry for fast food. That’s how much.

That sounds flippant but I don’t mean it that way.

I could lose a few pounds. And on my way to work I like to buy a ham, egg & cheese sandwich.

I really want that sandwich. But I know I would be better off without.

If I eat breakfast first, then it’s much easier to skip the sandwich.

My “good” breakfast is oatmeal and a smoothie (banana, yogurt, orange juice, blueberries and spinach).

Power bars and fruit pies and chocolate bars are not healthy. Power bars are mostly sugar and protein powder.

Eat a scrambled egg with some chopped up bell pepper for breakfast, if you have toast make it with whole grain bread. Eat a salad for lunch. Have fresh fruit for a snack before dinner. Let all that fill you up.

And keep walking, work up to a half an hour then up to an hour walk to and from home.

Drink plenty of 100% fruit smoothies. It’s the tastiest way to get fruit down your neck.
Also, try McDonalds’s deli range. It’s still full of shit, but not as much shit.
If you like getting your food delivered, I’m sure you will find lots of places that deliver all kinds of food. Italian being a prime example.
Mix it up a bit.

Or if you want, don’t worry about it. If you enjoy eating a lot of fast food then eat a lot.
I’m not being patronising, fuck it, just do what makes you happy.
There’s a lot worse things you could be doing, at least your not a heroin addict.

I’m gearing up for the answer to this question, while at the same time, crying my eyes out at the prospect of anyone eating fast food everyday of one’s life. Eating fast food is like asking, energetically, for a death sentence.

I love a big mac but I’m not going to eat fast food every day, just stick to mainly home cooking then treat your self a couple of times a week because there is no cancelling out. Take the big mac yes it’s bad bad bad as every one says but it’s not all bad if you look at it in the most deliciously way it was intended to look at it, its got your bun for carbs then you get nutrition from the salad, sauce and sesame seeds and then there’s your burger iron and protein. Eat what you want just don’t be greedy it’s the greedy that causes the problems. Also in my opinion there are more people now suffering from obesity and food related health problems since the world started turning into health safe foods than they were in the olden days.

You are probably consuming too many omega 3 oils, so only use flax seed or fish oil at home (for cooking, making salad dressing, etc).

Your sodium intake is high, so add spices to your cooked vegetables, but no salt.

You’ll need to decide for yourself if you are willing to add healthy fats to your already high-fat diet, such as avocado, eggs and nuts.

I would cut back on the fruit pie and make sure the chocolate is dark chocolate (you might need to wean yourself up to the dark chocolate, but you can train your taste buds to like it). Try baking or sauteing an apple or berries with cinnamon to replace your fruit pies.

Blackberries and salmon are great. Try to get salmon in pouches instead of cans to avoid BPA and whatever else leaches out of the cans.

Berries are low-sugar fruits. Eat a lot of them. Also green apples.

I don’t see anything about vegetables. Try to eat a variety of colors. A baked sweet potato and a green salad would do you wonders.

Aim for 7 servings of fruit/vegetables a day, but err more on the vegetable side than an overabundance of fruit.

Don’t let anyone get you down. A small health improvement is an improvement. You will only sustain one to two changes at a time anyway, until they become a habit.

You might want to read this Article explaining why most fast food, and that includes McDonald’s and KFC, is really bad for your health.

You need to make a concerted effort, coupled with more knowledge, about what foods you choose to put into your body. Right now, I would say you’re headed down the path to disease, most likely heart disease, diabetes and possibly cancer.

Like the others have said, you can’t cancel out the effects of eating bad food, simply by adding some good foods. You need to cut out the bad foods. And that doesn’t mean that you can never eat another hamburger or fried chicken, but if you eat that stuff every day, or even more than once a week, you’re doing your body and your mind a terrible disservice.

In the meantime, have a look at this list of the 25 Most Healthy Foods by Prevention magazine. All of these are common foods that are readily available at most regular grocery stores.

Good luck and good health to you : )
