Can you help me find a top and shoes for this skirt?

Asked by jordym84 (4752points) May 1st, 2013

One of my good friends is getting married one month from today and I am one of her bridesmaids. Instead of going the traditional route and assigning bridesmaids’ dresses, she chose instead to go with a pretty lace skirt (the picture doesn’t do it much justice) and left it up to us to pick the top, shoes and accessories. She gave us basic guidelines (top: “cute white/cream/ivory top, please pick what you are comfortable in. The top can be sleeveless or have sleeves, just pick what you feel pretty in;” shoes: ” a light pink/nude flat or heel. Yet again, you can use something you already have and I am not worried about all of your shoes matching, just be comfortable. You will be walking down the aisle in grass so I do not recommend a skinny heel because you might sink right into the ground;” accessories: “feel free to wear a necklace and bracelets but I will give you some earrings, I see gold color in your future”).

I’m not a fashionista by any means, and so I’m turning to you, my dear jellies, for help. Can you make some suggestions with pictures/links? I have to be budget-conscious because I’m already spending a lot within the next month on wedding-related expenses as well as other personal expenses.

I look forward to seeing what you can help me come up with!!

Your link isn’t working for me.

Oh, wow. That is beautiful. Very nice.

@bkcunningham Isn’t it?! I love it and I foresee myself wearing it again after the wedding.

Yes, I love that skirt. I’d want the top to match the color of the skirt and have the same type of lace. Or maybe a cream color. I don’t think white would look right. I’m looking for a blouse online. Harder than it sounds. LOL

jordym84's avatar

@bkcunningham I know! I’ve been looking for a while now but can’t seem to find anything that would go well with it…

I think cream color would work good, maybe a tan or light mid brown top. Black shoes would work. I’m trying to avoid upstaging the bride.

@Adirondackwannabe Thanks! I’ve seen the bride’s dress and it’ll be close to impossible to upstage her even if anyone wanted to lol It’s a really beautiful and unique dress (the girl’s got style).

@jordym84 Okay. If she’s amazing I’d go for it a little more. Some type of pink, not hot, maybe pastel with red shoes. I’d have to see them together. Or a pastel violet color. Not sure about the shoes. Not red shoes. Reconsidered that idea.

@bkcunningham I like the second one and the price is right, $10.00!

bkcunningham's avatar

Is it $10 or $70? It is beautiful either way.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@bkcunningham I loved that first one. That turned me on just thinking of it together. I wasn’t thinking that light but that would be amazing.

bkcunningham's avatar

I love them both. Those are two examples of what I’m thinking when I look at that skirt. You are so easy to please, @Adirondackwannabe. It is sexy though. Very nice.

chyna's avatar

@bkcunningham You are correct, the price is 70.00. I was looking at the shipping cost.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@bkcunningham I’m actually demanding, but I try to be nice. But that top is so hot it would go great with that dress.

I don’t know about lace on top and bottom, and I really don’t know about having the top and bottom the same exact color. Normally with lace skirts, you go simple on top with a comementary color to avoid going overboard with lace and being too matchy-matchy. To me, adding a lace top would be like wearing jeans and a denim jacket. Biiiig no-no.

I like the first lacy top listed, though, if only the bra cups weren’t so blatantly visible. I tend to steer clear of see-through tops unless I have a cami underneath. And especially for a wedding.

Personally, I’d keep it simple but classy with a white or cream camisole and a black or brown cardigan with matching flats (or maybe wedges if you can pull it off).

See, I’d wear denim pants and a denim jacket. I’m not very fashion forward to be honest. I’m glad she has some opinions with good taste and a good fashion sense.

@bkcunningham I love the first top!!! I don’t know if I’d pair it with the skirt, though (not too sure about lace on lace). I’m thinking something along these lines (in white, not orange). I’m just afraid of it being be “too simple.” It’s an outdoor wedding during the summer in a part of Texas that’s supposed to be very hot and humid, so I guess it could be an appropriate choice, weather-wise? What do you all think? I mean, I could always dress it up with some jewelry.

Or maybe this one (tucked in)?

bkcunningham's avatar

That’s okay. Just be that way. I tried. At least @Adirondackwannabe like’s my taste. ~

I loved it bk. I enjoyed this. @jordym84 Surprised I’m a guy?

jordym84's avatar

@bkcunningham LOL I still love it though! And for what it’s worth, you totally made @Adirondackwannabe‘s night! haha

@Adirondackwannabe Nope, not at all! ~

I would wear something very simple up top, so as not to compete with the lace. Here are some inexpensive options:

Dressy tank (“shell” color)

Sleeveless peplum

Hi-lo Peplum tank (“brulee” color)

Pleat neck blouse (polar bear)

Cinched neck (white)

Ruffle placket (white)

Swiss dot sleeves

For shoes, I’d go with the nude/tan color. Here are some inexpensive flats and some wedge sling thingys,

I like the style of tank top that you suggested with it. Considering the weather, I’d say it’s appropriate. It’s a little on the casual side, but it could easily be dressed up with a necklace and a more formal hairstyle. I tend to think that the collared shirt style detracts from the femininity of the skirt, which I don’t think would match the bride’s aesthetic here. Think soft lines, flowy fabric, and draping instead of structure, in this case.

As for shoes, I would echo the sentiments of others that nude flats or wedges would be ideal. Just remember that you’ll be on your feet for a while, so make sure you’ll be comfortable. @augustlan offers some great suggestions that are cheap.

I would suggest stores like Target, JCPenney, and Old Navy for similar styles at low prices. Good luck!

Thank you all so much for the wonderful suggestions!! And thank you, @augustlan, for the links! I’m going shopping tomorrow and I’ve got some of those items on my list of things to look for.

augustlan's avatar

Good luck, and let us know what you end up with!

I couldn’t find what I was looking for (at least not in the colors I needed), so I came back empty. I hate shopping as it is, and going to the mall on a Saturday was not my brightest idea. I brought the skirt with me and tried it with different white tops, but none of them looked good with it. It’s a really hard color/style to match because white looks too bright and creamy tones don’t go too well with it. I’ll try again next time I go to the store…

I just thought of black, but then reread the details, and the bride doesn’t want that. Maybe a very light gray?
