Why is it that when we take a break from working out, we feel like a bum?

Asked by Mama_Cakes (11160points) May 2nd, 2013

I have been working out everyday for the last week. Today, I decided to take a day or rest, yet it is making me feel sluggish.

Why is that?

Endorphins are released when you exercise and we are habitual creatures. There is also the possibility that you are guilting yourself or worried you won’t actually work out tomorrow.

Just guesses though.

If you keep at it, and continue that break for a year or so, then you’ll be fine. Not necessarily “healthy”, but you’ll stop feeling like “a bum” and be back to “normal” again.

That’s all you, girl.

Your muscles need a day of rest.

Working out every day doesn’t give you sufficient time to recover, if you’re not used to working out that much. Even pro athletes need recovery periods. If you’re tired and feeling crappy, it’s probably not because you didn’t work out, but because you didn’t rest.
Or it could be guilt, as mentioned above. You might feel physically crappy if you’re not feeling very good about yourself for not working out today.

It used to be easy to get overtime, and we would have contests to see who could work the most days in a row. My best was 60, but I know someone who did 180.
On that first day off, you sit at home and dwell on how you aren’t getting paid, and you feel worthless. It is a crazy addiction.

Our brains crave rewards, which go missing in such a case.
