Does anyone here use eBay? If so, do you use for extra cash or to make a living?

Asked by Headhurts (4505points) May 4th, 2013

I was just wondering. I have sold quite a few things on eBay, and have probably made about £2,500 since October. I know people can make a living out of it, but I don’t know how they do it. I’m down to just selling little things now for about 99p, but I just like the fun of bids.

I would be interested in peoples views.

Years ago I loved listing things to make extra money. Now I only buy things and tend to give stuff to charity instead of selling them.

I haven’t myself I have a friend that sells and upgrades all of his electronics that way. Breaking them up into parts if not functional or worth more.

Anything else would be a waste accoding to him and that way he can justify the upgrades.

I know a few other people in town who do it as a second income. Can’t say how it turned out but as active yardsalers and deal shoppers or even buying bargains on ebay or craogslist and turning them around.

There is one lady who made a business out of it. Buying and selling things for a small commission. Not sure how it did but we live in a smallish isolated area. Seems she enjoyed when I talked to her. Guess the rest is secondary.

I tried selling through Ebay. With all the time spent on packing and shipping I found I was probably breaking even.

@Dutchess_III Thats what I’m finding at the minute. I seem to be under charging postage.

I use ebay mostly to unload small items that I’m no longer using. I sell most items for little more than the postage. I make the most money from selling unusual plants from my garden.

You can make a lot of money on ebay if you know where to buy items that are in high demand at a cheap price. I have an idea but I’m too chicken to run with it.

Good luck to you!

@gondwanalon We are hoping to move house soon, so we getting rid of a lot of stuff. I have sold quite a few things that I thought were rubbish, and a while back, I would have just thrown them in the bin. Its nice that other people can make use if it all.

@Headhurts You definitely can’t make it selling nickle and dime stuff. The highest I sold anything for was for $25.

I had a teacher in high school that would drive around in rich communities looking for yard sales. He said they would sell all kinds of high end stuff for next to nothing (unopened video games, consoles, phones etc) and then he would sell it all on eBay. He said he made quite a bit of money doing that.

It’s kind of a self sustaining hobby for me. I have some money in Paypal and use it to buy stuff and accumulate the money for stuff I sell. Lately, I have bought a little more than I have sold.
