What's up with South Carolina?

Asked by syz (35938points) May 7th, 2013

An adulterous, cheating, lying, trespassing, disappearing-on-his-job politician with the largest ethics fine in history, elected? Running on a campaign of fiscal responsibility when he used taxpayer funds to fly to Argentina to boink his mistress? For the party of “traditional family values”?

Apparently that crap flies in South Carolina. They find it acceptable as long as it doesn’t directly affect them.

He is part and parcel of the political climate in the state, which is very backward and right wing (Forgive me cuz; I have cousins who live there.)

I live in South Carolina and, boy am I out of the loop, I had to google this to figure out what you were talking about. Mark Sanford, obviously, but I had no idea about him being elected (or even running).

South Carolina is a backward state. Here, any Republican is better than a Democrat. They’re so willing to forgive him, but just ask them what they think of Clinton’s affair and they’ll have a lot of ugly things to say. Hypocrites, like most Southern and/or Republican people.

I’d also like to point out that his opponent was not only a Democrat but a woman as well. She didn’t even stand a chance…

Same thing that is up with Georgia district 4 when they keep electing this idiot

I am from South Carolina. I don’t understand it either.

Just for you, @josie. Enjoy.

People in South Carolina forgave him his sins. They apparently didn’t like Colbert. Nothing to think about really.

@bkcunningham

You can’t, as they say, make that shit up.

The proverbial poster boy for those who might argue against democracy.

An embarrassment not only to Georgia 4, but perhaps to the entire South, if not the whole US

How do his constituents live with themselves?

Here is the person he replaced. Sad. That’s Hotlanta for you though.

Yet another example of why I am glad to have spent my entire civilian life within 100 miles of the Canadian border, as far away from that as one can get without leaving the 48 contiguous states.

It’s in the water, or the air !

All’s possible in love and politics.

These traits are unacceptable to South Carolina, unless they are running against a Democrat.

I agree with @filmfann.

One of the greatest mysteries of the cosmos: this elusive semi-extreme conservative mindset can not be confined to typical examination.

This puts me in a conflicted situation because on one hand, the more liberal hand, I feel his sex life is really none of my business except where it involves the use of public funds and my entire focus should be on his ability to do the job. So, if he is capable, I should vote for him.

One the other, conservative hand, I feel righteous indignation over his lying, two-faced, lying hypocritical attitude and the violation of his sacred marriage vows and the public trust and as such, I would NEVER vote for this person again… No, wait, that can’t be right.

We need to work through the hypocritical bs on the right, and we know it. It’s always been a white male world in America, and the rest of us are supposed to take it, like Jefferson, they talk a good game, but in their private lives, it’s a free for all. The hypocrisy and double-standards have to go. I can’t wait to see a woman or a non-white person as a Republican nominee if they can break into the ‘club’. (And yes, I lean to the right)

…“This is why it might surprise you to hear that Republicans are by far the more diverse party when it comes to statewide elected officials such as senators and governors. On this front, they leave Democrats in the dust.”... Source

KNOWITALL's avatar

@bkcunningham But are they willing puppets for the GOP party line? Original thinkers who are independent and strong enough to challenge the status quo is far different than just having some color in your skin. Does that make sense? I want someone who shares a lot of our ideals to basically tell the ‘club’ to back off and try something new, but if what’s happening now is lining their pockets, it’ll be hard going.
