Why would I vacation in your area?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29688points) May 10th, 2013

It’s almost summer vacation and someone asked me to describe my area’s unique features, so I thought I’d ask the collective.

Missouri is gorgeous! We have lots of unique caves (used by outlaws like Jesse James), beautiful lakes (some man-size catfish), gorgeous rivers we float, Native American Indian relics/ areas, and all kind of interesting things to do.

How about your area? Be as general or specific as you’re comfortable with.

Because I live in one of the best places in the world, the San Francisco Bay Area. Food, scenery, arts, sports, hiking, camping, sailing, bicycle riding, music, drinking, religion, meditation, yoga. Plus this summer the America’s Cup will be here.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@zenvelo One of my friends goes there often, she says there’s pirate caves, too.

MIlo here: Because I will be signing my book every Sat. from 10:00 AM to 11:00?

And scenic wonder of of the Berkshires.

Um. Um. Um. We have the most spectacular, awe inspiring storms. Sometimes they’re hard to see because we’re all hunkered down in the basement, but you can sure still hear it loud and clear. We take bets as to whether the house will still be over our heads when we come up.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s very exciting! :) :) :)

Because my city’s slogan is “Keep Austin Weird,” and there’s nothing weirder to see than an elephant eating barbecue ribs!

For family history or sightseeing. Loch Lomond and the Clyde Estuary are nearby. Bring an umbrella.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We can have a keg party in the country. Bring tick repellent.

tinyfaery's avatar

It’s LA, baby.

YARNLADY's avatar

I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would choose to vacation in Sacramento, California. None of the attractions here are as good as the ones you find in other major California cities, yet the prices are just as high.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@tinyfaery Yeah, I don’t think I’d ever want to come home.

ucme's avatar

Because i’m here of course.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Tell me where “here” is, @ucme, and I’ll jump in my car straightaway and come visit you.

ucme's avatar

I live in england town, on the north east coast…wait a minute, you, a woman, driving!?! :D

Dutchess_III's avatar

I suggest you stay out of your living room for a few days….

El_Cadejo's avatar

I couldn’t in good faith suggest you come anywhere near NJ :P

KNOWITALL's avatar

@urbateman Jersey has the shore and diverse culture and history right? Goodlookin people and tough cops, food?

El_Cadejo's avatar

You’re forgetting the over abundance of douche bags…. The best thing Jersey has going for it IMO is the Pine Barrens but they pale in comparison to other places in this country or abroad. And yes there is a lot of history here but not much of it remains how it was except places like Batsto (where the jersey devil is rumored to be from) but other places like AC with a TON of history don’t really show many signs of that to this day, its just a bunch of shitty casinos/slums.

glacial's avatar

Because we have festivals all summer long. And the food is excellent.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@uberbatman Too bad in my mind it was cool. There are hollers here where you don’t go and plenty of douchebags.

This CNN article and this New York Times article describe my hometown of Frederick, MD pretty well! I absolutely love living here, and I’ll share with you why!

It has great history- It was founded in 1745, and most of the historical downtown architecture and parks reflect that. You can do things like visit Francis Scott Key’s grave and see the Barbara Fritchie House and Museum. There are also several battlefields surrounding Frederick, if you’re into Civil War history. But aside from the historical aspects, Frederick’s downtown is extremely lively, modern, and cultural. There are tons of great boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bars, art galleries, etc. One particular attraction is Volt, an upscale restaurant owned by Top Chef runner-up and executive chef Bryan Voltaggio. I personally love just walking around Downtown Frederick. One of my personal favorite places it go is Everedy Square and Shab Row, where there are tons of antique shops, ice cream parlors, etc. You can also see these gorgeous trompe l’oeil paintings by William Chochran all over town. Oh, and it’s absolutely beautiful at Christmastime.

Things in Kansas are so much simple than that ^^^^^. Keg party or tornado. Or catfish. But I refuse to help you with that.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

I live in Memphis. The bulk of things to see can be done in a day, two days tops. We have The National Civil Rights Museum (note: part of it is currently closed for renovations). Sun Studio and Graceland are great if your friends are Elvis fans. Then there is Beale Street, a zoo, a couple of minor museums, and well, that’s about it.

JLeslie's avatar

Because the gulf is beautiful. Weather has been really nice, high 70’s and low 80’s, calm breeze, blue skies, and a 15 degree drop in temp at night. Not to mention beautiful sunsets.

You can go see the Dali museum, see dolphins play in the wild, eat some of the best gelato and great seafood. If you go to the Greek Village of Tarpon Springs you can buy real sponges from the sea and eat delicious gyros and baklava.

If you like thrill rides you can go to Busch Gardens.

I live in Clearwater, all those things are within 20 miles of me, except Busch Gardens is probably 30.

Disney is 1.5 hours more or less.

gailcalled's avatar

^^^ @Pied_Pfeffer: I live on Beale Rd., confirming once again my pleasure in no longer needing to trave.

SuperMouse's avatar

You wouldn’t. That may sound like a joke but it isn’t.

Coloma's avatar

I live in the beautiful Sierra Nevada footholls in Northern CA.
Rich in Goldrush history, gorgeous rivers, premiere white water rafting and Kayaking, glorious nature trails and one hour from Lake Tahoe and numerous other mountain lakes and rivers. Need I say more? :-)

You can also visit my historic town of Placerville, formerly known as ”: Hangtown” back in the day when stringing up outlaws, claim jumpers and cattle rustlers was an everyday event. Get a rope!
lol

Sunny2's avatar

Because it’s everyone’s favorite city.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Coloma THAT sounds cool my hubs and I love the old west and want to pan for gold.

Arewethereyet's avatar

We have ancient lands, a living ancient culture, the great barrier reef, amazing beaches, magnificent forests and mountain ranges, insane weather, the outback, great food, great culture and in comparison to just about everywhere, very few people and those that are here are laid back, friendly and love having overseas visitors to show off our spectacular country to. Ooo and koalas, kangaroos, emus and my fave wombats :)

dabbler's avatar

When you get home from NYC you can annoy your friends and relatives with comments about scenes in every other movie you see that “I’ve been there! Hey, I saw that!”

mattbrowne's avatar

1) Everything looks green from April till October.
2) You can enjoy 18 hours of daylight from May till July
3) During the summer our country features a country-wide outdoor air conditioning system
4) Buildings that look old, are truly old, for real

Dutchess_III's avatar

Wish you were here now. Tornado sirens going off all over. I’m on the deck watching.

Coloma's avatar

@Dutchess_III Be safe! Jesus, just saw a blip on the news, it is baaaaad in your zone. Awful, scary! I’ll keep the earthquakes, wildfires and rattlesnakes out west thanks.

mattbrowne's avatar

So terrible what happened in Oklahoma City !

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes, it is Matt. It’s horrible.
