How do I change program icons in Windows 8?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) May 15th, 2013

I rarely use my “start screen” anymore, so I rely mostly on a handful of programs pinned to the taskbar on the desktop. I want to change them out for a set of .ico files I have ready to go, but just changing the shortcut icon doesn’t change the appearance of the pinned programs on the taskbar. How do I change those instead?

I use AutoHotkey (free from autohotkey.com, and an awesome utility in so many ways) to set up keyboard shortcuts to nearly every frequently used application that I have. I move most icons off my desktop just to keep it clear of all that BS, and only rarely use the taskbar icons.

I also use AutoHotkey to maintain shortcuts to all kinds of special characters that I need from time to time but don’t want to have to look up in charmap.exe, such as áéíóú äëïöü âêîôû àèìòù ÁÉÍÓÚ ÄËÏÖÜ ÂÊÎÔÛ ÀÈÌÒÙ ñ Ñ ç € £ ¥ ¢ ± ¶ § ¿ Ø ø and a ton of others that won’t even print in this text box.

I even stored :¬) there in case I might want to ever use it.

It’s a very handy program for when you want to graduate from silly icons.

@CWOTUS While I agree, it doesn’t really answer the question.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room‘s suggestion is the best. Just note you’re changing the icon for the shortcut, not the program. You’ll need to redo it for every shortcut you create/modify.
