Are you often annoyed with the camera person?

Asked by JLeslie (65418points) May 19th, 2013

I’ll be watching a performance, a singer or dancers, singing and dancing, and the camera is pulled way back when I think it should be closer in or vice versa. It’s so annoying, it happens a lot in my opinion. Another thing is sometimes they don’t hold the camera still enough, it’s at funny angles, or swirling around the performers. Does anyone like all that movement? Don’t you want to see the group dancing in unison together, not just two of them?

Yes! Or they might be focusing on one person and I’d rather be looking at the other person near them. The worse is the ‘sea sick’ camera, the swirling or moving fast. I think film has changed and they are trying to appear too arty farty at times!

IF it is a video production, multiple cameras, the video director is calling the “shots”. I know I’ve done video ops for a community cable tv. Some really weird shots and angle requests by the director.

Particularly in dance performances, they film only the top half of the body. That really annoys me. The only answer, of course, is to attend the live performance, if you can. However, for the last ballet I saw live, my friend had seats in the upper balcony. We were so far up that the background for the dancers was the floor they were dancing on. That was a waste of time too. There may be an answer to the problem, but I don’t know what it is.

I frequently has issues with it. They often show the dancers faces – how ridiculous is that?

I also don’t like to watch travel shows where they spend most of their time in bars or restaurants talking to people.

As @Tropical_Willie has pointed out, the camera guy just runs the camera. The director calls the shots; literally, “he calls the shots” (and decides which ones make up the presentation).

Yes, I realize it is someone else choosing which camera is on and where the camera person os positioned, I should have specified that.

@Sunny2 @YARNLADY Exactly, the close shot of their face when it is a dance performance. It’s ridiculous.
