Is it cheaper to grill with propane or natural gas?

Asked by josie (30934points) May 20th, 2013

Assuming the hardware is already in place, i.e. a NG grill, an available gas stub, plumbing knowledge etc.

I am talking simply about the fuel. Cost per unit volume.
Does anybody know?

According to this site for a given volume, propane contains about 2 and a half times the energy of natural gas. As for cost natural gas is about 1/6 of the price of propane. Also barbecue enthusiasts rate natural gas over propane.

For the equivalent heat content Natural Gas is less than ½ the price of Propane. Bottled propane is expensive!

Charcoal is cheapest for me, but then I make my own.
