I need your help, Jellies. What do you think they're looking for with this request?

On Craig’s list, under jobs, there was an ad for online writers. I submitted an inquiry, and here’s what I got back:

Online Writing

You requested more info so here’s the next step.

Show off your writing skills.

Explain Quantum Physics and how it relates to the Law Of Attraction.

Hint: It would be beneficial if you understood Quantum Physics for yourself. YouTube is a godsend.

Also, create a really short story that fully and creatively explains the two.

Around 600–800 words but don’t shrink to fit.

Mind your grammar.

This is a sort of contest. Bring your A game. What better way to get to know you?

The purpose of this will be revealed at a later time. Good luck.

What do you think the purpose is? I don’t know whether I’m writing for children or the general public. I don’t know if they want “funny” Which is what comes out when I’m writing, if it’s allowed or serious?

Left to myself, I’d gear it toward kids, <15, and it would have humor woven in, and, at the same time, clearly defining how they relate (as soon as I figure it out myself! :)

What do you guys think?

I would not think that an essay or short story on quantum physics and the laws of attraction would be geared to kids. First, I would do some serious studying (you-tube) and thinking about how the two relate, then come up with an approach. Funny can backfire if the reader’s sense of humor is not the same as yours so I would use it sparingly. Hope this helps.

K, but what does “creative” mean, I wonder.

Well, first see if you can establish the connection between the two and then maybe the creativity will spark. Or maybe you can ask another question here.

In the absence of any other direction, I’d be more inclined to go with your own instinct. Funny, geared toward adolescents – and instructive. I wouldn’t dumb it down for adolescents if I were you, but write (given your constraints!) as if you’re writing to someone with a general understanding of science and complex thought.

If they don’t like your approach, your target audience or your humor, then fuck ‘em. The attitude that gets me though many days is, “I was looking for a job when I found this one. If you don’t like the way I’m doing it, then I can happily look for another.”

Well, in order to write it geared toward adolescents, it would have to be simplified, but not necessarily “dumbed down.” I think I can do that.

What if…what if…what if it’s The Onion skulking around looking for staff writers? :)

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III Do you have any idea whom it’s for? That would make a big difference.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Nope. You know as much as I do.

BTW, @CWOTUS that is exactly what I was thinking of. “Funny, geared toward adolescents – and instructive.” Yep. Learn something while enjoying the article.

I’d say they are asking you to do their homework, but in a clever way.

I think they’re just screwing with you. There’s no such thing as the “law of attraction”. They just want to see how much you can BS.

flutherother's avatar

I am guessing but it might be for some ‘new age’ sales pitch. I don’t know what else brings these two disparate topics together. They will be looking for exciting writing that sucks the reader in.

A little research is a dangerous thing. Here’s a place to get you started thinking.

Rarebear's avatar

Ah, so that’s what the Law of Attraction is. Dangerous bullshit. Dutch, avoid this job.

Dutchess_III's avatar

After reading @janbb link, you’re right @rarebear. It’s BS, and I agree with @elbanditoroso…someone’s trying to get someone to do their homework.
@Rarebear, but why would you say it was “dangerous?”

Before you submit it, be sure to copyright it, if only to print it off and put it in a self addressed envelope and mail it to yourself. That’s called a poor man’s copyright, but if the envelope remains unopened, it’s still legal.

That is so sad, @Rarebear. I hope she had a good quality of life before she died. One of my girlfriends was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer at Christmas. She’s scared. Very scared. She’s doing everything her oncologist tells her to do. She came down last weekend for her MIL’s 89th birthday and we spent some quality time together. Before she left, we held each other and cried. She’s really afraid of what the future is going to bring for her and what her children and grandchildren are going to witness because of the cancer, the treatments and upcoming surgery.

@Rarebear Thank you.
Thank you all.
