How do I manipulate this picture to fit the frame I want to put it in?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46804points) May 25th, 2013

This picture is an 8 X 10, horizontally. I want to put it in a frame like this. It’s more vertical, which wouldn’t be a problem, but it doesn’t cover the edges of the picture as it rounds out the side.
Basically I need to “add” something to the sides to account for that.

Since it is obviously a very special picture to you and you don’t want to mess it up, I would take it to a framing shop. I know it will cost some money, but it will be worth it to have someone in the field do it in a professional manner.

@cyna….I’ve scanned it (obviously.) I’m not going to touch the original, but I can mess with all the scanned copies I want to. There must be a way to manipulate the scan.

That’s my Mom and Dad on their wedding day, BTW! Ain’t they gorgeous? That pic…THEY…always reminded me of Jackie and John F.

They are a georgeous couple! They do look like movie stars.

Yes, and they never did quit! Man…when I was about 13 my Mom and Dad were going out. This was the early, early 70’s,just out of the 60’s, and she had this one funky dress with wild (as it hippie wild..deco sort of) flowers all over it…she was always up to date on fashion. It was ankle length, but slit all the way up to front, at least to mid-thigh. At 13 I was thinking “Man. That woman has some GORGEOUS legs!”
She was SO up to date we used to steal her clothes as teenagers. I stole her clothes as an adult. Now..I’ve inherited all of her clothes.

You could add a white boarder to the photo, then add a white vignette effect and softly feather it back into the photo.
If you want me to do it for you then just let me know, I’ll give you my email address so you can send me the full res file and I’ll do it tomorrow when I get a bit of time.

You could use an oval mat, like this. You’ll lose some of the vertical image, too, of course.

Do you want to frame the original or a copy of it? If you want to frame the copy I would enlarge the pic to the point where your parents would fit into the entire area. Or photoshop the sides to make the photo wider. I wouldn’t like all of that blank space though. That way you could also get rid of the fold line across the top right. If you want to use that original photo, then just get a smaller frame. It should fit into an oval frame.

@rooeytoo I want to frame a copy. As far as getting a different frame…..Well, I got two identical frames at auction. I think they’re kind of special…vintage although not worth a a lot of money. In fact, this is exactly what they are. They’re made in Italy, originally had pictures of flowers in them, and the glass is “fish bowl,” if that makes sense. It bows out (which is another problem..do I leave the pictures flat or figure out a way to make it curve into the curve of the glass?)

@Crumpet You’re on, ‘cause I don’t know what a white vignette is! Can you just use the pic in the link I posted in the details? I was wondering if there was a way to copy and paste sections of the black and white back ground to expand the border….

Edit…it doesn’t completely fill in the TOP AND BOTTOM of the frame. It fills in the sides just fine.

Using a mat will still fix that, @Dutchess_III, and will help keep your picture flat in the frame.

I know. It would just be cool if I could copy and paste sections of the picture to the top and bottom to custom size it and make it match. To me, a mat that doesn’t create an entire, even border all around the picture looks like….well, just filler. But you know, a black or grey mat wouldn’t be bad.

If you are going to use a copy, not the original, it is not a difficult job to alter the photo to fit. Any shop that prints should be able to do that. I would have it printed onto canvas, that makes a beautiful job.

Oh! Good thought @rooeytoo.
